I just recently installed 7 64bit over my Vista 64 bit (ultimate) and everything is great so far, except neither of my optical drives are available.

Lite-On DVDRW SOHW-1693S
MSI CD-RW CR52

I initially got an error on both drives for "Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. (code 52)"

Both listed the cdrom.sys driver but also the unsigned file GEARAspiWDM.sys in the windows\system32\ directory.

I figured I'd rename the GEAR file and uninstall/reinstall the drivers for the optical drives, but it just tells me that it loaded cdrom.sys but can't load any device driver for the hardware.

Device manager shows them with yellow caution tales and lists both reasons as "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (code 39)

On the driver details tab both show C:\windows\system32\cdrom.sys as the driver and it shows it as signed.

Uninstall whatever installed that Gear junk -- probably iTunes. Windows has had a perfectly good ASPI layer for years and now it's got something better SPTI -- apparently nobody told Apple. The problem is that you're installing low level drivers for a beta OS from a company that's notorious for not caring if they screw up a Windows box. What's worse, it was an upgrade install. Never upgrade. Ever.

If you want to fix this one issue (there will be more) you'll need to remove the registry entry for Gear's "ATAPI upper filter".

You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording program in Windows XP: "error code 31"

Thank you for the reply. I found the regedit trick before I went to bed and it seems to be working now. I haven't tried to burn a disk yet but at least I can see both drives.

Dude the solution is above -- it's a simple registry edit

Sorry for the thread necromancy but I too am having the same issue. I attempted the registry fixes but only got Win7 borked and it had to reload from a previous save spot. I'm thinking my only step left is to reinstall Win7 and see if that fixes the issue.
