Changing Product ID

Hi,

My problem is that I bought a lap-top with windows 7 in it. But after 30 days of usage, the operating system expired. I didn't know back than but I could have activated the operating system with the product key at the back of the computer. So, I found another trial version and installed it. And I did that several times because they were all trial versions. But I just learned that I did actually bought the windows 7 with my computer and that I could activate it with the product key on the back of my computer. but the problem is that I didn't get a recovery cd or something like that for the operating system when I bought my computer (btw, I did get a recovery cd for windows vista in the previous computer and I was able to reinstall it whenever I wanted). So I lost the the initial operating system in my computer, the one with which I bought my computer because of the installation of other trial versions and I don't have a cd with which I can regain it.

On the other hand, in the back of the computer, on the labeling of windows, a product ID is written just above the product key. And I'm thinking that if I could change the product ID of a trial version to the product ID of the previously lost original windows 7 to which the product key corresponds, I could enter the product key and activate the trial version that I'm using. First of all, I ask if that's a logical and possible operation and secondly "how to do it".

Thank you in advance for your helps.

No OEM computers (computers with win7 preloaded and preactivated) come with trial version of win7. So your story is hard to believe.

If right now your computer has the SAME version installed that it ORIGINALLY came with AND the COA sticker has the SAME version written on it, you can try activating online by inputting the key on the sticker (this method works SOMETIMES). Or you can call MS and do a phone activation.

And dont bother with that product id, it wont help.

Actually, you are right, I said that it expired in order not to complicate my problem. To tell the truth, I was a little confused when I bought it and I THOUGHT that it was a trial. So I found a crack version of windows 7 for which I was promised that there is no expiration (but there was), and I installed that by deleting the original windows 7.

And now I'm trying to recover that operating system that I paid for and deleted to my stupidity :)

So, my computer doesn't have the SAME version installed that it ORIGINALLY came with (because as I said, I formatted my computer in order to install crack version)

At the second reading, you are talking about the same VERSION, not the same PRODUCT with same product id and key.

but I don't understand what you say with "if the COA sticker has the SAME version written on it".

How can I find out which version does my Certificate of Authenticity refers and which version I'm using or where to find the exact same version?

Since you installed the trial on your computer, you should know what version it is (whether home premium or pro or ultimate etc.), if you dont, click on start orb, then type winver in the run or search box, that'll tell you what version is installed.

The COA sticker is a rainbow coloured sticker at the back of OEM computers which bears the name of the version (E.g. Windows 7 home premium) and the COA key.

What brand is your computer and where did you buy it from?

It's an LG R560. I bought it in Turkey from Media Markt.

And I tried to type my product key to a trial windows 7 with the same version. But it didn't work. So the phone activation can help me ?

Right. Does it have a COA sticker at the back? If yes, what version of win7 does it say? If its not win7, what else does it say?

You need to remember what version it came with, otherwise you cant be helped.

I suspect you got taken for a ride with a trial version of win7. I dont whether you actually paid for the win7 that came with that computer.

Does your computer have a recovery partition? Click Start, then type diskmgmt.msc, post a snip of that window here.

I'm pretty sure that there isn't a recovery partition. I've annexed the disk management table.

I'm almost certain that the version I got with my computer was "32 bit - home premium"

Doesnt look like theres a recovery partition (wonder what that RAW partition E: is though its empty).

Try getting a win7 home premium disk 32 bit (borrow, download), then clean install, dont enter the key during the install. After that, try entering the COA key, if it doesnt work, activate by phone.

Yeah, that's a tough one:) Actually, I used windows xp at the same with windows 7 in my computer from time to time. And I think that's the reason of that raw part. I happened to me before and the only solution was to clean format the computer. And as you can see, it's the second time it's happening.

Concerning my problem, I will do as you've said. Thank you very much for your help. I will keep this thread posted if I reach a conclusion.

Why can't you tell us what version of Windows 7 is installed on your computer, or what version the computer came with which should be written on the COA sticker on back?

How could you not know whether your computer is running Home Premium, Professional, Basic or Ultimate??? Bill told you how to find out easily.

And how could you not see that on the sticker?

If the versions match, then you can use the key to activate it at Computer>Properties.

If not, find the correct version to install and activate.

gregrocker, I believe he mentioned a bit ago that the laptop was a about a year old and the COA on the bottom was quite worn. He posted the info he could read but couldn't tell what version it was.

that,'s right mborner. I don't exactly remember which version it was. And it has got erasen as the time passed from COA sticker. But I did a research on google.com.tr and I found out that the same distributor who sold me the computer continues to sell it and with a windows 7 home premium 32 bit operation system. So probably that's the one for me. But I don't really know where to download it. And does the language makes a difference? Maybe mine was in turkish (sorry for my catastrophique memory).

and I know now which trial version I am runing (ultimate 64 bit but that doesn't help much)

There are no "trial" versions of Window 7 made available. When Win7 is installed without using a key, it will run for 30 days -- after which it will expire. That's not a "trial" version; that's an "unactivated" version.

Since the seller is still in business, contact them and demand the activation information. They sold you the machine; they are obligated to provide you that information.
