The trick to budget shopping is having the monies ready to pounce on sales. For what you're looking to do it's the only way to play the game if you don't watch for the sale then you're going to get a lesser brand and smaller size then the ones that hit the sale bins. I look at many locations daily for my needs but it sounds like once you find something then you'll need to go back to the folks to buy it and in that time frame the deal can sell out.....happens all the time. Set something up with Mom so you have the information ready and can jump on a quality drive like: Crucial, Samsung, Kingston, Corsair or Mushkin. Please look no smaller then 60-64gb as what fit's today with a clean install may be maxed with updates and a few programs, for me my minimum recommendation is 128gb but that's me.
