Check Disc

Starting approx 3 wks ago each time I booted my PC I got "check disc" prompt from Windows. I ran it a few times and then would skip (only took 4-5 mins) I then Ran HP Hardware Diagnostic Tools Advanced a few times. Every thing OK. Ran defrag on hard drive. Re-booted and no "ck disc". Next re-boot, "ck disc" back. Can't defrag or restore due to "file system corruption" on hard drive. HP phone support was a waste of two hours. Had two "critical events" about the time this started. Power loss shutdown and an IE8 problem. IExplore, exe, version 8.0.7600.16385. I would like to find a solution other than sys restore.

I don't think that repair applies here. I rebooted and the "check disc' is for "C" drive. In the past I've done both short and long checks that include the "free clusters". During one of the many diagnostic checks done I was shown the corrupt files. Camera battery dead, so no pic. Corrupt files appeared to be in my photo albums. I don't recall what I was doing when I had power outage shutdown. Is there a repair for Windows Live Photo Gallery or do I need to delete all and re-install?

Just located the backup files notepad listing 19 different files that could not be backed up due to being on corrupted "C" drive. Am I correct in assuming that the drive rather than the files is corrupted? If so, would a system recovery be the best solution? My info loss would be very little.

The "drive" IS the files. The files may be corrupt and, therefore, unreadable, or the disk may be defective, e.g., bad sectors, and therefore unreadable. Whatever the reason, not being able to properly read files creates issues.

Have you read the ckdsk log in EV?
Did you try to clear the dirty bit as PoorMan suggested?
Does the backup log specifiy the corrupt files. Obviously, if they are JPEGs of your dog, the SFC will not correct those.

Tried the sfc/scannow. Following msg: "Sys Repair Pending Requires Reboot to complete". Tried three times with reboot each time to allow "repair". First two tries chkdsk ran and said all fine. Third time chkdsk did not run and I thought maybe "repair" done. Only way I know to check is by trying sys restore. Would not restore.

I figure the "repair pending" is some half a>>ed repair HP tried. Knew I should have bought a ZT

Not all files were photos. Some documents and WinSys32config. Some settings. Favorites. Quite a mixed bag. Total of 19

Tried sfc/scannow. Following msg "Sys repair pending, requires reboot to complete". Tried three times with the reboot in between tries. "Repair" still pending. 19 corrupt files. Two were JEPGs, some documents, settings and one was IExplore, exe, version 8.0.7600.16385.

I figure the "repair" is something HP tried when I contacted them. Knew I should have
bought a ZT.

Sorry about the duplication. Didn't realize first were posted on 2nd page.

No. Pre installed by HP. Just off the shelf dummy. First PC was custom built 486/66 with awsome 250mb hard drive. Nothing was ever going to be faster. Then came Pentium 90 and the rest is history. Have wanted to build my own since then but haven't. Pushing 70 and don't know if I ever will. Thanks for the idea. Unless someone comes up with a "magic wand" fix, will do a sys recovery. Can replicate most that will be lost. Most difficult part is dealing with Norton. Will probably dump them anyway for AVG. Price is right.
