On boot check disk starts and does not complete, states

Could not complete due to recently installed software package

Ran restore from advanced boot options, still get same error from check disk on startup.

ran Scannow from command prompt, states corrupt files unable to fix some of them. Ran scannow 3 times.

attached a copy of CBS log. I down loaded a copy of the win 7 X17-58997. ISO I just need to burn to DVD.

Is there another way I can fix this? Or do I need to replace one at a time??

Thanks in advance for your help

Boot from the burned ISO (X17-58997). "repair computer". "command prompt"
Determine the drive letter of windows (not necessary same as in win7!
Code:
diskpart
list vol
exit

Assume drive letter is D.
Code:
chkdsk/f D:
Errors? Repaired?

Aside from doing the above steps, why are you wanting to run chkdsk? I recently had this issue of it not completing and the drive, as it turned out, was bad. A scan with Western Digital Life Guard told me, "Too many errors".

I've had that problem myself where a drive suddenly requires a chkdsk that will not complete. The way I recovered from it was to schedule a chkdsk.http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html step 11. I suspect that it is trying to do the chkdsk too late in the startup cycle whereas the scheduled one runs at the correct time.

I ran X17-58997. ISO from a dvd and it did not work ( not sure if I did something wrong or not) So I ran HP recovery and reverted to factory set-up, all is good now. Thank-you all for your replies and advice.

Glad you solved... all document lost?

What happened after booting from burned ISO? DVD has a few folders and files on it... or just the file called X17-58997.ISO?

Backed up stuff I needed so no data lost.

I set to boot from CD drive first and it acted like it was reading from drive for about 1 min or so and then booted from hard disk. I looked at the DVD and can see something was burned to the disk , but I could not see any thing on it when I tried to open the disk. It was a new DVD and that was the only data I put on it. I also verified the disk at the end of the burning so I don't know what I did wrong.

What happens if you browse the disk in windows file explorer? Or command prompt? Assume drive letter is D

Code:
attrib D:\*.*

What is listed?

If you exhausted the steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start then it shows how to rescue your files and correctly burn the WIn7 ISO to DVD in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which is the last-resort step.

I would have helped you do this so you could enjoy the best possible install of WIn7 instead of the worst possible install of Win7 which is the HP factory preinstalled WIn7, with the worst load of bloatware in the industry.

However you never reported back any results for the steps I gave you so I had no idea what you were doing. I wonder why you would ask for help here and then just ignore it? The result of that is that you now have the worst possible install one could have of Win7.

If you'd like help getting a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 and are able to cooperate rather than ignore, then we will be glad to help you.

If not then at the minimum I'd follow these steps to Clean Up Factory Bloatware to regain some Win7 native performance.
