Hi
I'm running Win 7 64 bit on my laptop, and I've noticed some disturbing clicking in the harddisk. I ran chkdsk and it found some errors but Windows is now running with much instability, freezing up at seemingly random moments and hanging for minutes at a time.

So I did some reading and it suggested to run chkdsk again and get it to do a full check. I did this and it goes to stage 5 and finds bad clusters and repairs them, but at one file it just hangs and won't continue.

My understanding is that
1) the hard disk is likely failing and
2) corrupted windows files because of the bad clusters might be responsible for the instability.

But my question - is it possible with a switch from the command line to force the chkdsk to the end and not hang on that corrupted file, or should I not bother...

If it makes sense to not bother, should I replace the harddisk before re-installing, or just reformat and reinstall.

If I should replace the hard disk, is an SSD the way to go with a laptop?

Thanks'

Geoff

I would guess its time to buy a new hard drive. Try your best to save your software if you can still access it and move it to a new HDD. Just what I think though

I'm not concerned with losing anything, I have a thorough backup regime in place.
I'm more curious as to whether the hard disk can be repaired at this point, and how to do that.

Just get the manufacturers diagnostic software and run it on the drive and get the error information and your serial number and the manufacturer of the drive should slide you a new one if it not that old....

I had a ancient 2.1 gig hard drive....click of death....I opened it....unjammed the arm....and it worked.

I doubt that would work now....they wear spacesuits and work in clean rooms for a reason....

If you truly don't care about the data....run it till it quits....but have a spare handy....

Hi Geoff,

Thanks for the information. Your disk is certainly on the way to failing but unfortunately there is little you go can do about it. Getting a new disk installed is both the easiest and cheapest solution.

I downloaded Seatools for Windows and ran some diagnostics and they failed. But then I ran Seatools for DOS and it found 100 errors and repaired them all. I know there are bad clusters and the drive is on the way out, but I'd like to keep it alive as long as possible.
But then when I ran the CrystalDiskInfo again, it still listed the same 3 errors.... Any ideas on that? I'm sure I'm banging my head against the wall and should just get a new hard disk installed... Is that easy enough to do yourself? Hmm, I've never been inside a laptop before.

Hi Geoff,

Those errors cannot be corrected since they represent damage/wear to the mehanical and electrical componenets of the disk.

There are 7 attributes designated as critical in disk failure of which you have 3:

Reallocated Sector Counts
Current Pending Sector Count
Uncorrectable Sector Count

My recommendation is to backup all your data, and then have the disk replaced. I've never worked inside a laptop either - its probably best left to the pros.

Does this laptop use an OEM Windows 7?

Regards,
Golden
