Solved chkdsk on next start up

I have tried twice in the last month to schedule a chkdsk on restart only to see a dark screen with colored dashes at the very top of screen, why? also I cant do anything on the laptop unless I shut it down for 2 or 3 days to get it running again.

Did you restart or shutdown then start? I'm thinking the hybrid booting on the Laptop may be interfering. Try either using Restart or if you want to wait until the next time you use the machine hold down the shift key when you click shutdown.

Hi, Thanks for your reply, is it really necessary to run the chkdsk regularly ? if not I just won't run it anymore or will the computer run faster after running it?, it is a little slow now but I don't want to mess it up again. Dave

To see if there are any issues you can run it from Explorer. Right click a drive, click Properties, then Tools Click Error Checking, then click Check Now. Make sure both check boxes are not checked. This will run in read only mode. If there are no problems it will say so. If it finds something wrong it will tell you that the option to fix problems wasn't checked and would you like to run it on next boot etc..

If it comes up clean no need to run it at boot.

Edit: As far as the system being slow it could be the drive if it has to retry to get data. But more likely it haasn't been defragged in a while(unless you have defrag in task scheduler.)

I use tools that use the WinAPI functions as they are well known to be safe. Other than that it depends how you have your system set up. There are many defrag strategies.

First thing to note is if you use anything other than the defrag.exe that comes with Windows, make sure to turn off the defrag in Task Scheduler. Otherwise what can happen is you can have a 3rd party defrag running, like MyDefrag and the system defrag can start up right in the middle of it. In my case it caused MyDefrag to crash. At least it didn't scramble the disk.

If you search Defrag on 7 Forums you'll see plenty of discussions which product,method and the reasons why, favored by each person. No sense getting that started at the end of this thread as it will often go on for several pages that have all been posted in the past.

But to answer your question right now I use Auslogics defrag free most of the time. Now and then I may use the defrag.exe that comes with Windows 8 (which is what is on my Laptop.)
