Solved .chm files show blank window

OS - Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

Downloaded professional software (tax preparation) and help file is .chm. Turns out all .chm files on my hard drive have the same problem: file opens, if there's an index/TOC, it displays, sub-headers open as well in index/toc, but in text area only blank white. No error message, no nothing.

I've tried several solutions - unblocking is not available, as the "properties"window has no 'unblock' button. Other "solutions" I've tried in various forums have no effect whatsoever. Cmd line solutions fail to run. I'm going crazy trying to solve this. Any ideas, anyone? Please?

Problem solved

After much more searching and several other failed attempts, I came across the simple solution: install Microsoft's patch to block automatic installation of Internet Explorer 11, deactivate and then uninstall IE 11. Suddenly all the .chm files work fine.
