I had a look at what's in the reg file, and it's quite involved, so appears to make sure all of Chrome is uninstalled.

I understand this happened after a Chrome update, but something is obviously amiss. Do you have a system restore point from before this began?

Sadly no restore point - well not from before this started happening anyways.

At step 8 did you check the box Show other restore points. Still nothing there?

Yup, still nothing - I have no restore points saved before Chrome started acting up.

I tried method 4 - and saved the linked file as "remove.reg", but it won't run - when I click on it and click ok, I get a popup box saying:

"The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.". What am I doing wrong here?


I also tried starting Chrome in safe mode and it doesn't run properly there either.

Yes, I tried that earlier today. I created a "test account" with admin privileges and tried running a new install of Chrome from yesterday. It still wouldn't run - just the usual "aw snap".

I have no idea what to do about this. I can't believe something like this can happen to the point where it's impossible to do a clean install and start over. Ridiculous.

I wish I could try the manual removal as suggested above but as I explained above the reg file I saved won't run.

The link isn't working for me any more. Confirm when you click to save as it is remove.txt. I get a htm page, and when I follow the link I get a Google help page. Quite odd...

Okay, I ran the reg file included in the zip file you provided (thanks). But still no good. I installed the newest version of Chrome and it still just loaded "aw snap". I uninstalled again and used the reg file once again and re-installed Chrome again, just to try again, and still the same thing.

I can't believe there is no way to get Chrome working on my system. I've been using it for years and now this. Unbelievable. There must be something left over or preventing it from running properly. But what? The registry is cleaned out if the Chrome reg file is doing its job, there are no user profiles for Chrome, the Program Files folder for Chrome is empty, I've tried disabling my firewall, antivirus, I've tried standalone installers, 32bit installers, web installers. What else is there to try?

This Google Support Page says it's because a web page crashed. Have you tried to launch Chrome with a URL different than your default home page? Example:

I can't access the settings so I can't set a new default page - so I can't set it to launch a new page. But when I put a different url in the address bar it still just gives me the same "aw snap" page.

EDIT: oh, I figured out I can just add the url I want it to start at in the shortcut (like you said). Still no good though. Same thing every time.

One thing I can do is open a new incognito page from the menu - because it just loads a blank page that says "you've gone incognito". But as soon as I try to go to any web page I get the same "aw snap" page.

First, you must enable crash logging in advanced settings by ticking "Automatically send usage statistics and crash reports to Google".
Crash logs can then be found in chrome://crashes.
Note that by enabling this, your crash reports and stats will be sent to Google servers...

I posted my issue there yesterday and got 1 response but it was not helpful - they just told me to delete my default profile (which I already stated I had done).

I can't get into the Chrome settings to even do that - as I've said, I can't access settings, extensions, history, or anything else in Chrome - even selecting "about Chrome" gives me "aw snap".

Well; at this point; I would completely uninstall chrome; download, install, and run revo uninstaller to get rid of any remaining registry entries; download a complete new fresh copy of chrome; install that; then reinstall the extensions you want for chrome and see if it works that way for you. If not post back and we can take it from there.

This looks to be an Online Armor bug

@Sie_Deen... OK, I am a step closer to having Chrome working properly. Your post on the Online Armor (OA) settings helped.

Here's the resolution, and the problem/conflict with Online Armor.

To answer one of your latter questions, Help/About shows Google Chrome v 17.0.963.56 m (and says "up to date").

In my earlier posts, I was correct in saying "disabled" as far as Online Armor.
When I right-clicked on the Shield Icon, their pop-up menu appeared, and I cleared the check-marks for Firewall, Web-Shield,
and Program Guard... which one would think would have turned them off completely; but apparently not.
There was an option I did not try... right-click the Shield and click "Close and Shutdown Online Armor".
... I tried it, and Chrome started WITHOUT the "Aw, Snap!" message... so we were on to something.

I re-started Online Armor, and restarted Chrome, and the "Aw, Snap!" came back. According to OA's config, Firewall, Web-Shield, and Program Guard were still OFF (unchecked) from the config menu. I looked into the "Programs" list in OA, Chrome was NOT there. I added Chrome to the trusted program list (using the Insert key, its not all that obvious how). Then I Restarted it... and it started properly!

I already had Revo Uninstaller installed, and I tried using it - it fails the uninstall every time. When I uninstall using the "add/remove programs" through Windows, it seems to uninstall fine. When I try it using Revo, it starts to uninstall but fails and leaves all the folders and files seemingly untouched. Revo has never failed before but it won't uninstall Chrome for me. Even after new installs over the last couple weeks, it still fails.

Nope - this failed also. I right-clicked the shield and selected "Close and Shutdown Online Armor" and the shield disappeared. I then tried Chrome and it still did the usual "aw snap". I uninstalled it again and re-installed it with the offline 32bit installer, and it still isn't running.

I'm onto something and need help on where to proceed from here. I read that online armor thread, and several people mentioned changing the settings in compatibility mode for the chrome .exe.

When I changed it to Windows 2000 and XP, it wouldn't run. However, changing it to Windows Vista service pack 2 allowed it to run, and it updated to the newest version. It seems to run now in compatibility mode for Vista service pack 2. But if I change it to Windows 7, or uncheck compatibility mode, it still gives me "aw snap".

So what do I do from here. Why does Chrome run now in Vista compatibility mode but not Windows 7?

A debug mode log in the Chrome folder says:

"Could not find exported function RelaunchChromeBrowserWithNewCommandLineIfNeeded"
