Solved chrome wont update

and THAT folder Google has a lock icon.
I am letting tweaking.com repair permissions right through again first so I have a starting point...will update.
Bloody hell. the pain

Is there a folder named "Update" with a google update.exe file in there?

Try this:

open a command prompt, and type in the following (after replacing <your username> with your username):

cd "C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Update\"

then type:

GoogleUpdate.exe /RegServer

no update exe and I have tried that before with no success.
So why doesn't the update exe install...maybe that's the question.
Maybe do full install once more after permissions fix and reboot

Yes. If there's no update process it can't update. That's why I suggested the offline installer as it would hopefully overwrite that folder and install the correct files.

Anyway that's me finished for today. If anyone else has ideas please post. Will check back tomorrow.

If you don't have any luck the utility I prefer for resetting permissions to default is a script built into UVK.

You might look into that. The option is in the system repair section.

1000 thanks. So now I know what I need to see if fixed. An update exe in update folder. Why the f&*( it doesn't install not sure but will try again after fixing reg permissions again. Hopefully will have a happy ending when u get up again...so to speak!!

Just back for one more quick post:

C:\Users\your username\Local Settings\Application Data\ - you are not supposed to get access to that. It should be locked.

C:\Users\your username\AppData\ - this should not be locked.

ran your tool also re permissions. Still the Pete folder shows lock but nothing under that is locked.
Did full uninstall and reinstall with stand alone version.
Went to Pete/Appdata/Local/google/Chrome and now the olny folder in there is a user data folder nothing else. no update exe or folder anywhere

locked folder icon back again!

locked folder icon keeps appearing for users/myname

i changed to ssd a month or so ago and I think this started after that. Maybe a profile issue?

added a fresh win 7 user profile as a test.
Went straight to chrome to check for update in about box. Exactly same error and code

Ok found GoogleUpdate.exe in Programs(x86)/Google/Update
I execute it and nothing happens.
I check if Chrome has updated, same issue with error

and the service is running although it says 32bit?

Google Update process being 32bit isn't a problem. I'm beginning to suspect security software might be to blame as in Firewall/ Antivirus or Antispwyare with HIPS/ or HOSTS file.

googleupdate.exe is running so it looks like something blocks connection to the update server.

Busy at the moment though.

Okay I have to give up on this one. I installed Chrome 64bit (monitored install) then tried to reproduce the error. Nothing I tried could reproduce it.
