Great! Glad to hear it.
As I said, if it happens again I will dig deeper, but I suspect "GoogleUpdate.exe" is dependent on one or more of the DLL's in that "1.3.33.5" folder. You'll notice there are a bunch of GoogleUpdate* EXE and MSI files in there as well, but I don't know if any are called during the update process. Either way, I'll report back here if the issue resurfaces.

Ripper and thanks again Deckard. I have been trying to find a fix for years and no one has been able to help including the chrome forums so you are a genious for cracking it.

You're welcome and thanks for the kind words, although I wouldn't go so far as "genius" - it's usually just knowing enough to get myself into trouble

haha. Well well done in any case. I have tried so many uninstall re installs etc. I was almost going to reformat but I have so many programs with custom settings that it would have been a nightmare

YO!!!!!
I been searching for weeeeeeks looking for this and yeah everybody you can skip the first 7 pages lol (I mean good troubleshooting tho) this update fix was finally what got it working after fresh reinstalls and cleaning my registry and everything with chrome and canary wasn't working. It's Oct 23 '17 anyway.....so for the next update we might need to repeat that process off a computer with an updated chrome? I hope I can do that.....

couple tips you need admin privileges to change anything in the google folder, AND you pretty much need to kill any google service that's running- I had to go into task manager, kill any google processes (and click process by ALL users and stop the google update installer service) probably shouldn't have google drive sync running or anything like that either (I didn't anyway). there was another place I found a google service running but I don't remember where..... but it took me a couple tries before I could delete the old update folder because it kept saying something was running. But after deleting all my google activity this worked perfectly, I went back to chrome and got the green checkmark! thanks so much.

now onto my potential flash problem and/or windows update problem

I'm curious about something if anybody wants to take a crack at it......
when I went to restart the google update service it said "access denied".......there's a way to make that service start automatically but I don't wanna mess anything up lol. but does this fix leave us open to any security risks if our chrome is up-to-date but the google update service isn't running? I don't know or really care but just thinking bigger picture

Works!

After years, this problem has finally been solved! I confirm the zip file and directions have done the trick and have spent many hours messing with this headache. Thank you Deckard.
