Clean Reinstall of Asus U45JC-A1 Laptop

OK if you're tired you shouldn't do any more.

Before starting tomorrow sure to read back over the last steps I gave you because it seems a matter of the order to install those drivers, possibly Intel first and then Nvidia.

I don't see anything about that model having switchable graphics which would be what you have if you didn't have a Nvidia card added. I'd look in BIOS setup on all tabs to see if there is any display choices at all to choose one or the other, or indications it has switchable graphics for gaming which I dont' see in the Manual.

Yea it required me to install intel driver first. So then i did that, then computer went to black screen... and now i have to install the nvidia again in windows update and making sure i only check it and leave all those other updates unchecked.

There's a possibility it may also need first that Intel Mgmt chipset driver to help sort the graphics.

I only wanted you to install the Asus download VGA driver if the Windows Update didn't work. Hold off on it for now.

Yea very tired now. Yea i will read it again tomrorow. It seems like i have to manually install one by one and cant just do windows update all like my dell xps. I know there is some issue with the nvidia driver which is why this is very complicated. The dell xps one when doing the windows update was a breeze, it basically just did eveyrthing.

You're doin fine, learnin a lot. Hang in there. ;)

There is something very strange about your laptop having two display drivers. The only time this normally happens is on very high end gaming laptops to boost gaming display speed. It would say in the Manual if this is the case unless you paid extra for the feature and should know about ordering it.

Normally Standard VGA driver goes away when the Display driver is updated.

If it takes both drivers after installing Intel first and they both show up in Device manager then it likely has switchable graphics and there should be some controls for this in either the Intel or Nvidia Control Panel, most likely Intel Display controls since it required having it installed first probably to facilitate this.

When i got this laptop, i never did any upgrades at all. Also, its not a gaming laptop i believe. I just recalled the vga adapter in device manager was always there.

Have you installed the Nvidia driver yet? It appears you have two graphics chips or a card and chip - possibly switchable graphics - since you were prompted to install the Intel first yesterday when you tried to install the Nvidia? Didn't you get this Nvidia driver from Windows Update? Check for Updates now to see if it is queued.

You can find out what each of those other two are by googling the hardware ID from Device Manager - Finding Unknown Devices - Windows 7 Help Forums.. Then download and install them from the Asus webpage linked earlier.

When i went to windows update, i still see the nvidia driver as a recommended install which i means it didn't install on my computer yet.

Install the Intel and Net Framework first, reboot, then install Nvidia.

Read your Manual that I linked earlier and ask Google to try to find anything about the dual or switchable graphics on your model. If you can find nothing then look at the Intel Graphics control panel for any settings pertaining to this.

Can't install it. Says failed.

Which?

Didn't you say there was already an Intel Display driver installed in Device Manager? Compare it's date and version number to the one Updates is pushing? If it's the same then go ahead and install the others and skip the Intel Display.

You may need the Intel Mgmt engine to make the others work.

Okay installed the intel mgmt.

At the moment when i click windows update, theres the important update that is the nvidia graphics adapter. Also there are security updates as well so im doing those first.

In Device manager, theres only 1 exclammation point now the standard vga graphics adapter.

The network adapters now show

atheros ar pci-e gigabyte ethernet controller
atheros ar wireless network adapter

I asked you to compare the Intel Display driver that you said was queued in Windows Update to the one which was presently installed in Device Manager. I heard nothing back from you and now there is no mention of the Intel display driver. Did you install it?

If all that is left is the Nvidia driver and it won't install then try the Nvidia driver I linked last night from the Asus Support Downloads webpage.

Yes i did install the intel display driver i believe.

Right now its like this

Display adapters

Intel R HD Graphics
Standard VGA Graphics Adapter in Yellow Exclammation Point

the one in Queued... thats the Nvidia windows update right? Its the update i do and get the black screen. It says published 10/31/14 and its 233mb.

In device manager the standard vga gaphics adapster it shows driver date of 6/21/2006

Okay now theres a bigger problem. I installed it through the asus link without an issue. However, my computer each time after it starts up, it basically freezes after i click on DEVICE MANAGER and i have to power off and then power on each time now. I belive this have something to do with the nvidia download.

So i went to device manager it shows

Intel R HD Graphics
NVIDIA Geforce 310M

Im not sure why it shows 2 of them as you earlier mentioned it should be only one.

So right now assuming computer restarts there isn't an issue. The moment i go to device manager and click on it from start menu, computer basically freezes soon after that. When im just clicking other things like google and checking sites, doesn't seem to freeze.
