Cleartype Out Of Control In Outlook 2007

I have Cleartype turned off system wide. In Outlook 2007 the user interface is not showing any Cleartype, as I would expect, but when I type a new message, the text is extremely blurry, as if it's trying to render it in Cleartype but it's doing a really bad job of it.

If I reply to a message, the sender's text in not Cleartype, but my response is the same as if I start a new message i.e. lousy looking Cleartype.

Any ideas on what's wrong and/or how to fix it would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. Problem is, I want it off system wide, including in Outlook. Turning it on would defeat the purpose. It seems really strange that it's only appearing in the "New Message" panel of Outlook.

Lotan,

Did you get to the bottom of this? I have the exact same problem as I re-installed Windows 7 retail from Amazon this week and put Outlook 2007 on, ClearType is OFF system wide EXCEPT in Outlook message boxes, I can't see an option anywhere to remove it.

Edit: Figured it out, for some reason Outlook didn't want to take notice of the system wide setting, so once I had enabled and then RE disabled ClearType all was well.

Edit 2: Spoke too soon, now Office is doing what it liked again and is not respecting the system wide setting. *sigh*

Is there a way to FORCE office to obey what I am setting in Windows?

Cheers,

Mike

Is it really cleartype doing it? Or is it merely some sort of app specific font scaling issue? (Some fonts when scaled too small go really blurry)

With cleartype, if you look close (really close) you can see little colored edges around some letters. If it is merely a scaled font then it may be blury but the edges will be perfectly greyscaled into the background.

Office may have it's own font rendering that by passes the normal system settings though :/ might be worth a wider google search.

Managed to finally fix it for some reason after messing with ClearType the "Smooth edges of screen fonts" had reset itself to on again in:

Computer > Properties > Advanced System Settings > Advanced (tab) > Performance [Settings] > 'Smooth edges of screen fonts'

Sorted.

Thanks for the response.
