cloned 7 OEM to a new hard drive, and now it is not genuine.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium OEM which was installed after the Vista when this PC and hard drive were new in March 2009. So this old hard drive has some bad sectors and so I used EaseUS Partition Master to do a clone copy of only my 7 partition, which I put onto a new hard drive in a external eSATA enclosure. Then I switched out drives putting this newer external internally, and installing the old internal in the external, but then it gives the error; "This copy of Windows is not genuine".

Hi Jim,

Nothing wrong with that report.

However in a way you answered your question, you cannot run 2 OS's on 1 product key
The internal and external Drives both with a live system
Thats what MS's servers are seeing it as

If you run that tool again on the other install it will likely return non genuine
these lines on both system is why MS is reporting the issue -

allthough that type of product key can be moved between machines, the way you have it set up if you keep switching between drives, multiple times within a specified period, i think its a month, will also trigger the non genuine

images can be made without them - is this option availabie with EaseUS Partition Master?

Cloning a bad HD means all the bad sectors will be written to the new drive and second you don't know what's corrupted. Some cloning software has special settings for bad drives but if you don't follow that special setup clone or image will write bad sectors to new drive

Okay and thanks for that information. I will try to create an image of my original 7 with EaseUS, and is this the same as with live Linux, ( creating an image of a Linux iso file )? So what is the correct and legal method to move my old original 7 from the old bad sector drive, onto the new good drive, and then boot only that 1 Windows 7 hard drive installed inside my computer? When 7 detects the new drive it will not allow that due to the 7 OEM license is locked and mated with all the original hardware, so how do people deal with this issue if and when the hard drives fail? A full retail version of 7 may have allowed me to this?

Which application is good to use to create a image of my 7 for back up and recovery? Should I use Windows backup or a program such as; Acronis True Image? And where do I put this image to, on a storage partition either internal or external hard drives?

Windows system image works ok, but it isn't very flexible for the average user.

There are several free version of 3rd party imagers.

I recommend Aomei Backupper as it is easy to use and works well.

the ONLY way to fix it
REMOVE W7 on the external bad drive, otherwise as you've found out every time you plug it in it goes non genuine.


You can still use it afterwards as a spare data drive.
run this on the faulty drive, it might fix some of the bad sectors

Okay yes that is right, and I did delete that 7 clone copy, and then I did do a Windows 7 backup to that same external drive. So thanks for the help, and if my old internal hard dive does fail, can I restore a back up to a new hard drive with my OEM version, or do you need a retail version of 7?

Hi Jim,

most here create an image using macrium free.
(were not actually fans of the inbuilt W7 option)
Once your upto date on your new drive you can copy the image to ANY EXTERNAL media.
As long as its not being used as an operational drive you will not get the non-genuine problem

NO you do not need to purchase another licence - You have a System Builder licence that is transferable
(one step up from a basic OEM (factory built) licence.)
