I purchased a new computer and upgraded the operating system to Windows 7 Professional. I then loaded Call of Duty 2 in the virtual mode (xp mode) and when I try to run it, I get a Directx 9 error. Anybody have a solution?

XP Mode is not for gaming

the purpose of XP Mode is to allow businesses to use old legacy business applications within Windows 7 not playing old XP games

quoted from a Q&A session by Microsoft about XP Mode

Windows XP Mode is best suited for older business and productivity applications such as accounting, inventory and similar applications. Windows XP Mode is not aimed at consumers because many consumer applications require extensive use of hardware interfaces such as 3-D graphics, audio, and TV tuners that do not work well under virtualization today.

install CoD2 normally and if you run into problems use Compatibility Mode

also follow the steps outlined here Tips on Troubleshooting Game Issues...make sure you update your DirectX files explained in #5 for an older DirectX 9 game

Funny, I loaded this last night on my 64 bit system.
I just opened the disc, instead of allowing the auto run, and then ran the setup.exe in compatibility mode for XP SP3.
Installed and runs well :)

Unless you are told by Win 7 that you need to install or run the game on XP Mode, why go ahead and do so?

Also, with Win 7 or Vista, it is always recommended to install with elevated admin rights (right click and "Run as Administrator")

Even though win 7 or your card run on dx10, it is also recommended to install dx9 if the game requires you so... no damage will come to your dx.
