When I try to run Windows Update, I get error code 80070002.

I have tried running Microsoft Fixit with no luck.
I have tried deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder
I have tried running the WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab which tells me that there is an error 8007000D which it can't fix (curiously, after running Microsoft Fixit in aggressive mode and rebooting, running WindowsUpdateDiagnostic actually says all problems were fixed, but if I run it immediately once again, I get the 8007000D error).

I am attaching my CBS.zip file.

sfc /scannow only gives me the message "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." I have run a chkdsk /r, did not help.

We'll have to work on the Event Log first - it's going to cause problems otherwise.

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command...

REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon"

post the results

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs,Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.

3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit...'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Appears to have fixed event log.

Let's check the services involved.
Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands - post the results.

SC QUERYEX EVENTLOG
SC QUERYEX EVENTSYSTEM
SC QUERYEX WECSVC
SC QUERYEX WERSVC
SC QC BITS
SC QC BFE
REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\eventlog

Here's link to your issue click here. NoelDP is the expert here. As you will see, he tried diligently to correct problem. Repair Install was finally recommended. Takes a few hours for repair install to complete. Day or so for updates.

If you ultimately decide on repair install, it preserves all your installed programs, files, folders, music, pictures, etc., just replaces windows. I do them all the time. Piece of cake.

I have detailed instructions & more on repair install. Let me know what you wish to do. I have no problem with whatever you decide.

Hello again, I started doing a repair install but after the files had finished copying I get

How are you trying to do repair install?

You must run DVD, USB, or win7 folder from windows, not boot from DVD or USB.

If you are in fact, running it from DVD or USB within windows:

What Anti-virus, firewall, etc., are you running?

May be conflict there. Try disabling them, disconnect from internet & try repair install again. :)

If you're running any Norton products, they are famous for various issues. The Norton license key can be found at: C:\Users\<your system name here>\Documents\Symantec Copy & paste it somewhere else. Download Norton removal utility and run it. Uninstalling from Control Panel, or with Reno Uninstaller, isn't sufficient.

If that fails, try:

Open MSCONFIG, go to the startup tab and uncheck everything, then go to the Services tab and tick "Hide all Microsoft services", then uncheck all Non Microsoft services, restart and try to repair.

If that fails, are you sure your machine is not infected?

Here's a list of FREE, (I like free) programs that I use regularly on default settings, except for CCleaner. On Cleaner tab, under Systems, make sure Windows Logs is unchecked. It usually deletes MSDTC.log with other windows logs. You will then receive error with sfc /scannow or SFCFix.exe by Niemiro.

List of excellent scanners, for virus, rootkit, adware, nagware, pups, (free) I like free.

Malwarebytes

ADWCleaner

SuperAntiSpyware

HitmanPro choose x64 version

Rootkit tools

ASW.mbr

TDSS Killer

One of the above should resolve repair install issue, usually. (we're dealing with Microsoft)

Hello again and thank you for taking your time.

I'm doing the repair install from the same bootable Windows 7 Pro USB that I used to install windows on this computer. When I attempt to do the repair I have performed a clean boot (no startup programs and disabled all non-microsoft services), so no anti-virus of firewalls are running. I have never had any Norton software installed on my computer. I performed scans with Malwarebytes and Hitman Pro and all they found was a PuP which I deleted. I ran CCleaner which found around 800 issues in my registry which I cleaned. I rebooted and tried to run windows repair again (according to the windows repair guide on this forum) and still get
"Setup can't continue. Restart the computer and restart Setup. When prompted, try getting the latest updates" just after it finishes copying the files.

I assume my system is simply Fubar and that I have to format my drive and reinstall everything :)

did you disconnect from the internet & stop services, etc. that sometime causes error your getting.

Don't give up yet, try:

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

You can extract win7 to folder on desktop and run setup.exe then go to clean boot environment. From DVD I use ImgBurn. I'm not sure how to copy win7 from usb to desktop folder, I think you can just copy & paste? If you have ISO or DVD you can also extract it to desktop using WinRAR or 7-zip. I find WinRAR a little easier to navigate the first time or two. I'm not sure if the drivers for USB and DVD are loaded in Clean Boot mode. You could try to run setup.exe that way. I'll do a little googling and see what I find.

Apparently you can!

After thinking about Layback Bear's post, & everything we've tried to no avail, fresh install is logical progression.

You can use CCleaner to create a text file listof all your installed programs (doesn't copy the programs themselves). You should print the file.

Belarc-advisor will provide a plisting of all installed programs & their respective data, i.e. product key, etc. It takes a few minutes looking over the results to find what you're looking for. You should print the file.

Copy all you personal files, folders, music, pictures, etc. to external storage, USB flash drives & External HDDs are quite inexpensive. With the low price external HDDs available I'd go that rout. You could store several system images & incremental or differential backups & still have space.

I have 2 Segate Plus 3tb external hdds, one for my laptop & one for my desktop. I have system images for my father's computer, my sister's laptop, plus multiple system images, incremental, & differential backups on one with gobs of space left. 2/3's of HDD.

Here's just one of many deals:
WD Elements Portable 1 TB Portable HDD - WDBUZG0010BBK - USB 3.0

$49.00

Google and peruse
I use AOMEI backupper (Free) to do my system image & file/folder backups. I like free. Default is to image only the data on drive with compression. Saves disk space on external HDD

Just for info, I was dabbling in the system folder last night and crashed my desktop. Tried 16 restore points via windows restore. EVERY ONE FAILED WITH VARIOUS UNSPECIFIED ERROR CODES. For years I have not trusted windows restore points or backups for this very reason. Yes, I did a system image before I dabbled. Popped AOMEI Backupper CD in drive. Booted AOMEI from CD. On my laptop boot menu is F9, your's might be same. 20 minutes later, like I never had issue. ;)
