So my computer was working as good as ever 2 days ago, until for whatever reason its slowed to a crawl. I was in the middle of browsing the web when my comp became unresponsive. Its gotten progressively worse since trying to diagnose the problem. Its now taking forever to start up and I only get about a 15 second window of being able to open applications etc. before it gives up.

What I've tried:
  1. Run Avast anti virus scan (clean)
  2. Run Malwarebytes scan (clean)
  3. Run check disk to fix errors and recover bad sectors (gave 3 errors for video game files and said fixed)
  4. Attempted to run sfc /scannow in normal windows and got "windows resource protection"
  5. Attempted to run sfc /scannow in safe mode and couldn't get past 25% after 2 attempts
  6. I have x2 4GB RAM modules, I tried each individually and in different slots on motherboard, no luck
  7. I have both CPU & GPU software temperature monitors and they're in the normal temp range
  8. Got rid of any dust in and around my case

Please note, I'm having the same issues with slow down in safe mode

I tried the following after my computer had gotten worse, i.e freezing after a while
  9. Attempted system restore through system recovery options, resulted in freezing
  10. Attempted startup repair through system recovery options, resulted in freezing
  11. Attempted sfc /scannow again, this time through recovery options, 25%
  12. Changed boot order in BIOS and tried a repair install using windows disc, resulted in freezing

I have not installed anything in the past week and I'm not sure about windows updates. I've also not had a single BSOD, I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing when diagnosing.

I entered my computer specs into my profile but I can post them here if need be.

I'm just lost as to what I can do right now, any help is appreciated. I went ahead and ordered a new hard drive as I'm due one anyway but I'd like to know what the cause of this is as it's driving me nuts.

Firstly, thanks for the reply.

Is it possible to do this in safe mode as normal windows would be impossible at this point due to performance and freezing.

No dice. My computer is just locking up straight away now, I'm unable to get into the start menu let alone event viewer. I may have to concede defeat as I'm unsure there is anything else I can do without access to.. well, pretty much anything.
