Well, I installed W7 yesterday, and it looks quite promising so far. In fact, I'm genuinely impressed with it, except for the limited number of display drivers.

I put it on an old Compaq...model S3100NX, based on a Via chipset and utilizing an S3 ProSavage DDR video adapter. Of course I can't find drivers for it, for either Vista or W7.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I might find something compatible? My display maxes out at 1024x768 which, while decent, is hardly adequate.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Welcome to the forums Chuck.

It may indeed be too old to even have drivers for it. The thing is, MS does not make the drivers for hardware. The hardware manufacturers do. Have you checked their site? Also, go into Device Manager and right click on your display adapter and select Update Driver.

If this does not work, and there is nothing on their site, it is probably too old.

I did try your suggestions, with no results. Good ideas, though...thank you.

I expected that there would be no W7 specific drivers...but not even anything compatible with Vista?

The manufacturer sites (Via and S3) have generic driver sets that work with all versions of Windows *including* Vista, but I've tried installing them with no luck. Maybe it's just the install program, putting them somewhere that W7 can't find.

Heck, anything's possible.

I've been doing this for 20+ years, and I just have to ask this question for my own peace of mind. Are all Vista drivers compatible with W7, or only some?

Thanks!

Chuck

P.S. If worse comes to worse, it's got an AGP slot. The graphics driver is the only one that's missing...all the other embedded devices function fine.

All Vista drivers should work with Seven....

Try running the installer as an admin, with Vista compatibility mode.

I never found a workable driver. In fact, I gave the computer away...am building a new one from spare parts.
