Compatibility with Vista

I have a friend whom I helped to upgrade from Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit to Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit - he has a Dell machine and we used the Dell upgrade offer to perform the upgrade. Apart from the instructions being a little bit sparse this went OK and his Win 7 system seems to be working fine.

However one thing really puzzled us. He uses Nikon's PictureProject since he likes the way it allows him to create logical folders for his photos. The problem is that although this app worked absolutely fine on Vista (and XP Home Edition prior to that), it fails to start up on Win 7. I've tried compatibility mode in Win 7 (both Vista SP2 and XP) but neither change the situation at all. Now Nikon say the app is not supported on Win 7 (since they claim it is replaced by another app, which does not provide identical function - this statement appeared on Oct 19th), so there is unlikely to be any support form Nikon. However I'm still interested in why the app should fail to start on Win 7 when it worked on Vista?

We're not talking about connecting to a camera or scanner - just viewing and organising JPEG photos. Does anyone have any thoughts on why it is not working, and what I could try to see if it can be persuaded to spring into life?

if you cant run that program using comparability mode.. then the next choice will be xp mode for windows 7...

Don't think I can do that

The problem is (I believe) you cannot run this with Windows 7 Home Premium can you? At least if I go to the web site and select Home Premium as my operating system it seems to say I can't do it?

No, you can't do it with Home Premium as far as I remember

The problem just got a bit more wierd!

I just did something I should have tried earlier - my friend's system was an in-place upgrade from Vista HP 32 to Win 7 HP 32, and PictureProject did not work afterwards. I just tried installing PictureProject on my Win 7 HP32 (never had it installed before) and what do you know it works perfectly (well it starts up and I can see photos within it). On my friend's machine, where it was previously installed and working, it does not work after the Win 7 upgrade. Eh? Why would the Win 7 upgrade have corrupted something or changed some settings which make it no longer work? Any thoughts?

Just to conclude this story, today we tried to install PictureProject 1.7.5 over the top of my friend's system, but it would not let us since it said it was already at a higher level. So we then tried to reinstall the 1.7.6 update and this went on OK. Amazingly this seems to have reset whatever it was that was preventing it from running previously and my friend's system is now running PicturePerfect on Windows 7 with no loss of function or picture management information. All's well that ends well!
