Complete and unexpected System shutdown

Hello, Iv'e been working on this for a few days now and cant seem to come to any definite diagnosis so I really hope someone here can help!


For the last 2/3 months I have sometimes noticed (but never seen first hand) that if I left my computer on for a few hours that sometimes Id come back and it had turned itself off, and then of course when I went to turn it back on the "Windows has been shut down illegally start in safe mode etc" message came up.

However I ignored it as it wasnt as yet directly effecting me using my PC. Unfortunately 3/4 days ago it shut down whilst I was using it and it has since been a pretty regular occurrence.

There doesn't seem to be a definite pattern to the shut down,

it happens after a while if I play a game, in this case Civ 4.
I has shut down during watching a video, as well as on the internet with many tabs on and music playing. Also it does it if I initiate a virus scan and most interestingly if I run a memory diagnostic it shuts down.

This led me to think it might be a hardware issue, the problem being that

it has never shut down during safe mode and I left it on the BIOS screen for several hours with no shut down. Also I can initiate a virus scan in safe mode and it wont crash.

Ive already performed a system restore

I hope I didnt write too much here, Ive tried to be as specific as possible but Im sure there is stuff Ive missed.

Any ideas?

Try pulling all but one memory module and see if there is any effect. If there is a bad module, try and isolate it and remove it. Just a hunch.

Navigate to c:/windows/minidump and see if there are any .dmp files .. if so zip them up and attach them to your next post for analysis...

Hi Tews!

There are only 3 files in there and theyre dated from the 3rd, long before any of this started to happen Im afraid.
I never used to witness it happen but it does happen now whilst Im using the PC as described in my first post.
Im in safe mode at the minute!
There is no warning with the crashes and no Blue screen, just an instant shut down

just upload them anyway. Who know if solving issue with those BSODs will fix your instant shut down that you are suffering at this moment

Ok,
The DMP is way back in march therefore it's hard to conclude it's the problem you are having at this moment.
One of the DMP blamed the graphic card driver with stop code 116. One generic thing to try is to reinstall the driver, download the newest version of driver and install it on your system.
When upgrading your graphic driver you MUST remove all traces of the current driver. In order to do that we recommend using Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

When it is removed then download and install the fresh copy.

Another thing was blamed in the DMP was RapportPG64.sys. I've just done some research about this (coz it's hard to find), and I found out that it's some kind of malware, virus etc...and there is even an article talking about it and say it cause BSODs

if you still have it on your system, I recommend to remove it.

What antivirus software you are currently using?

Since the symptom seem to be hardware, you should perform some hardware stress test:
H/W Diagnostics:
Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:
Memory Diagnostics (read the details at the link)
HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link)

Also, please run one of these free, independent online malware scans to ensure that your current protection hasn't been compromised: Malware (read the details at the link)

Ok ill get on that right away, thanks for that.

I am aware of Rapport now, I uninstalled it this morning after it caused a problem with system restoring to certain dates, I also noticed it had no evidence of really protecting my pc any more than my anti virus software does and it used a good 10-15% of CPU sometimes.

I am currently using COMODO, I just switched from avast! However neither of these allowed me to virus scan in safe mode (because when scanning in normal mode the pc shuts down!)
so I went back to AVG and performed a full scan, a few things found and removed but problem not solved.

one quick question as Ive never removed my graphics drivers, driver sweeper is showing 3 Nvidia drivers, chipset, display and physx. Do I want to erase all of them?

Just uninstall the display driver and install the new downloaded one.
Also, third party antivirus software are notorious cause for BSODs. I don't know how AVG has been working on your computer but it's just not an exception for that. Stop code 50 is potentially caused by antivirus. I would recommend to uninstall it for now and try Microsoft Security Essential, which is known for BSODs free. Please use it instead because we can eliminate a big potential cause.

AVG is known to cause BSOD, on some systems. I suggest that you uninstall it while trouble shooting using the uninstall tool > Info > Tool (32bit) - Tool (64 bit). If you have AVG Identity Protection installed, uninstall it also >Info > Tool[FONT=&quot]. I recommend that you install MSE and make sure Windows Firewall is turned on.

Please let us know any news. Make sure to run the hardware diagnostic as I listed. For the memory diagnostic test, here is a short version of it in case you don't want to read the whole thing in the link I gave you earlier:
Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Hey Tuan thanks a lot, youve been super helpful.

Ive replaced the graphics driver, Ive ran memtest86 but it turns off at around 40%. However the shut downs appear to be less frequent than what they were originally, which is odd. It still happens when I play a game, in this case Civ 4, this makes me find it hard to believe that it could be a hardware issue with the RAM as Civ 4 is not a particularly new game and my PC shouldnt be stressed out by anything that game could throw at it.

I dont know.

Hey Tuan,

I have attached my minidump file..Please tell me what is causing my comp to crash all the time...randomly..
I ran speedfan utility, I found that my CPU was showing 98-100deg temp..Maybe thats why it is shutting down...(For that I would need good Cooling fan with replacement of the conductive paste in between fan & CPU).

If not the case, then maybe it is showing up in my minidump file...some drivers, memory, pwer supply etc...Please advise...
