Computer doesn't shut down after a BIOS upgrade.

I have Windows 7 on my HP Pavilion dv6629us and I downloaded a BIOS update from the hp website but now when I shut down the computer it shows me the shut down screen, then it goes black but the computer stays on (all the lights stay on). Any fixes for this? I just been shutting it down by pressing the power button when the screen goes black.

have you checked if this is not due to a Windows Update which needs to finish? Depending on your system, that can take up to 10 minutes....
To be sure, can you check for the status in your Maintenance center?

I don't think is the Windows Update because it always shows the percent of the update that its installing if it was installing the updates on shut down. But what is doing is saying that is shutting down and then the screen goes black.

When you power on again, does it say you did not power off correctly? If i does not... It could be a case of leds that still have power whilst W7 is really shut off...

Sometimes it does it but some times it doesn't.

Is there a perceptible time difference? Say you wait for 2 mins of black screen and then power off. Would it say you did not shut down correctly?

I think at first it did that cause it was doing updates but now there's no updates so when it goes black I shut it down and it doesnt give me any errors.

Ok... Maybe there is not a real problem? Lets do tests:
1. We wait after shutdown. A minimum of 20 minutes. See wat happens.
2. We boot in Safe Mode. Shutdown and wait and see. Any difference?
3. Check your powerplan, advanced settings. Anything there that can power-on your system?

I waited and it took exactly 10 minutes to turn off, but it didnt actually shut down, it restarted. But I wanted it to shut down not restart.

OK, that brings us closer to the possible culprit. It could be you have some device that is set to be able to power-on your system. If that device (could be USB, NIC etc) gets triggered, it powers up again.
To be sure, please check your Powerplan, also the advanced settings AND the energy settings in the Devices screen, PER device. If you are unsure of the settings, feel free to post a snip of the screen and we'll help.

I just reinstall Windows Vista from the computers recovery disc and the shouting down/restart problem its still there. I thought the restore would bring the BIOS back to normal but it didn't. The Windows is also acting really buggy. Doing that hold upgrade was the worst thing I could have done absolutely will never do another BIOS upgrade.
