Hi, i'm new to the forums and hopefully i find the help my computer needs. My PC is about 2 years old, i've been experiencing this problem ever since i got my PC. The problem goes like this, whenever i play, surf,or even do nothing on my PC sometimes it randomly freezes, no error messages,no CTRL+ALT+DELETE, can't move the mouse and use the keyboard, all i need to do is do a hard reboot. I don't know the exact reason but i have tried to search throughout the web and find similar cases like mine, i also tried the fix but the problem still persists. I tried every fix that i found like updating the drivers, reformat, memtest, temperature diagnose thing, disk cleanup, and almost everthing (at least the things that i know)And right now i have ran out of ideas and thinking that i should take this to a repair shop. But before wasting my time going to the repair shop, i want to ask you guys on how to fix this problem. It really is annoying for me for the past 2 years butnow i'm kinda pissed so i had to ask the question. Here are my PC specs btw:

CPU : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3820 CPU @ 3.60GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.6GHz
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 4GB x 4 = 16GB
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Video Card: AMD Radeon HD 6900 2GB Series
Motherboard: Asrock x79 Extreme3

Please do let me know if there's anything that i need to provide in order to determine the problem.

Hey, Welcome to SF!

Firstly, you might want to take a look at the BSOD forum for their required logs, because some of them may help us to diagnose your issue.

Second, can you follow this guide, just so we can get some more details from you? http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/180324-system-info-see-your-system-specs.html

It could be a lack of power from the PSU or into the MOBO.

Just a shout, but it could be your heatsink is incorrectly seated / Thermal paste has dried out.

If you have had the issue for a couple of years, is it a personal build? Or is it a PCSpecialist / OCUK / Scan pre build?

Hi! Thanks for the reply. Yes, my PC is personal built i have bought the parts then asked the personnel to assemble it. How will i know if my PC is not getting enough power? also i do think something is not properly seated. I never encountered BSOD throughout the years, only random lock ups with no reason. Anyways, here is my specs:

Sorry Buddy, but i can't see those links at work, can you fill out your system specs as the guide i mentioned above shows?

What size is your PSu? Usually you will have this problem with 3~400W psu's using the HD6900 cards with multiple HDD's.

It is highly likely your CPU cooler is not seated correctly, and it is just crashing because it can't disperse the heat correctly.

Oh, sorry. I already updated my PC's info

Sorry for being such a noob, but how do you determine the size of the PSu? Also about my CPU cooler, yeah, i think that's the problem since my CPU fan is sooo big it almost took the spaces inside my system unit.

Right first things first, your BIOS is 3 versions out of date, which may be a leading factor here.

Here is the DL link for your board.
ASRock > X79 Extreme3

Usually the size of the PSU is on the actual Unit,

Like above.

What kind of Cooler are you using? Does it have a backing bracket for the underside of the MOBO?

Thanks for the info btw!

It's a cooler master (forgot the model) but it's one of these

Cooler Master: Cooling

Also, does updating the BIOS erases everything life reformat? does it have any effects or such?

Ahh i remember those, i use to have a Z4 model. Basically you may want to check that the Thermal paste is correctly applied on the CPU with no gaps, and that it is evenly screwed down.

Updating the BIOS can be very quick and easy, especially with Asus models as it has software that can do it for you using one of the Utilities, it does not format anything, only changes the motherboards software so that it can enable new features / fix bugs with the old.

Let me see if i can page someone who knows more to this thread.

Yeah, right now i have a few suspects that causes this problem

1.) BIOS Outdated - will update bios now and check if the problem persists
2.) Cooler not properly seated
3.) PSu not getting the right amount of power?

I'm not much of a hardware savvy so i guess i'll leave it for now (since i'll take it to the shop tomorrow to get it clean)

3.) Motherboard not getting the right amount of power?

Fixed it for you,

But yeah, most times when a system just *hangs* it is a hardware issue from experience, if it was software you would get a BSOD or some other system information.

Okay, so i just finished updating my BIOS and i think the problem vanished. I tried playing a game (watch dogs) which my computer freezes up whenever i am at the menu, but when i started the game it works perfectly fine. I hope this is the cause of my problems in the past 2 years. I will still try to update if i encounter the freeze again but hopefully this is the end. Thank you so much for helping me sir!:D

Optimize the system services by creating a profile with minimal no of services. Services are nothing but the background processes. There are some services which are not necessary. Such services should be stopped.

1. Press Windows Key + R.
2. Type "services.msc" in the Open textbox.
3. Click the OK button.
4. Right click a service you would like to terminate, and select Properties option.
5. Service Properties dialog will open.
6. Click the Stop button.
7. Select "Manual" from the "Startup Type" drop down box.
8. Click the OK button.
9. Do the same for all unnecessary services.

Use the Zombie Soft Fix. Select "computer freezes a lot" in the drop down box. Select the operating system from the subsequent drop down box. Follow the wizard.

Windows provides a way to optimize system settings for best performance. You can either customize Windows for best performance or best appearance. The former option should be selected as shown below:

1. Right click Computer desktop icon.
2. Select Properties.
3. Click "Advanced system settings" link.
4. Click the Advanced tab.
5. Click Settings under Performance frame.
6. Click the Visual Effects tab.
7. Select "Adjust for best performance" option.
8. Click OK | OK.
9. Restart your computer for the changes to take effects.

There is no reason to edit Services.msc in Win7 as it is already feather light on adequate hardware. We tested edits during the early beta days and found all to have unintended consequences. None have been necessary since then either. I would not do this. If it was ever wise, we would know about it here at Win7's home on the web, the top tech forums in web history.
