Computer Idling at 55% Ram Usage

Hi, Singley.

If I may offer a safer way of controlling the programs that start with Windows, please consider WinPatrol. There is additional information about controlling start up with WinPatrol here: WinPatrol Features: Startup Programs

Download WinPatrol 19.3.2010.0 (Free & PLUS)
WinPatrol Info
(Window XP, Vista, Windows 7 including x64 support)
Release Date: November 4th, 2010
Setup updated November 5th

With regard to Java, following are reasons why someone may need Oracle Sun Java installed on their computer:

  • Playing on-line games generally requires Java.
  • With OpenOffice, Java is needed for the items listed here .
  • It used to be that Java was needed for websites to be properly displayed. However, that is generally not the case now with Flash having taken over.
  • There may be commercial programs that depend on Java. If Java is needed for a software installed on your computer, there should be a prompt for it.
Whether you keep Java or decide to uninstall it from your computer, it is necessary to remove outdated versions. Look in add/remove programs not only for the Java(TM) 6 Update (number) but also for any installation with J2SE, Java(TM) 5, or Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6. It is also advisable to remove the leftover files in your downloads folder.

In the event you keep Java installed, there should only be the current version in add/remove programs (as of this posting, Java(TM) 6 Update 22, available at Java SE Runtime Environment 6u22).

Since Java updates tend to leave leftovers, JavaRa is recommended. Freð ðe Vries provided notice that RaProduct's JavaRa has been silently updated to reflect the publication of Oracle's Java JRE 1.6.0.22. Leftovers up to Oracle Sun Java 1.6.0.21 are now cleaned by JavaRa. Simply download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program. (Windows Vista and Windows 7 users right-click JavaRa.exe > Select Run as Administrator)
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove older versions of Java.

I would also suggest you do a malware scan, starting first with a bit of a cleanup.

Download TFC to your desktop

  • Open the file and close any other windows.
  • It will close all programs itself when run, make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. The program should not take long to finish its job
  • Once its finished it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself to ensure a complete clean

After the restart, scan with your onboard anti-malware application. If you do not have one installed, I suggest Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

Corrine,
I personally feel that 3rd party programs should be avoided it at all possible when making recommendations to non-professionals.

It would be wise to advise him that MalwareBytes is NOT an AV program but rather a detect and remove program for various forms of Malware.

I think that MalwareBytes is an excellent program but malware is not suspected at this time.

Let's first get rid of trend micro and get MSE on there.

Hi, karlsnooks.

I suggested a malware scan because of the three java.exe processes running and only mentioned MBAM in the event Singley does not have SAS or another anti-malware software installed. If Singley choses to replace his TrendMicro antivirus software with MSE, that is certainly his choice. (TM isn't one of my favorites either.)

Corrine,
True. The three java processes running could be the result of malware. Definitely would be a good idea to run malware bytes over the system.

he really needs to get the running processes under control before recommending installing anything else :)

as chrome starts a new process for every new tab opened the multiple instances of java could be down to that alone

Chrome dos not require Java to work. Thus, the question as to why multiple instances of Java are running. Something is calling out Java.

I'll definitely be interested in hearing if MalwareBytes detected anything.

Also, I would like to see a snip of your present programs checkmarked in the StartUp tab of MSConfig.

@karlsnooks: Startup tab of MSConfig posted here: http://www.sevenforums.com/performa...mputer-idling-55-ram-usage-2.html#post1061069. Unfortunately, some of the items are cut off.

Singley, in order to provide a complete list of startup programs for karlsnooks, please do the following:

  • Open a command prompt by going to Start and typing cmd.
  • Right-click cmd.exe and select "Run as Administrator", approving the UAC elevation prompt.
  • Type or copy/paste the following: wmic startup get caption,command > c:\StartupApps.txt
  • Navigate to c:\StartupApps.txt and paste that log here as a reply.

Note: To paste the command, click the small C:\ in the upper right-corner as shown in the image below. Select Edit -> Paste.

Corrine,
I had already, in a previous post, showed him a clip of mine and made suggestions regarding trimming it down.

The historical portrayal of his startup programs is of no interest. If he followed my advice, a snip of the startup tab would show everything presently clicked.

Chrome dos not require Java to work. Thus, the question as to why multiple instances of Java are running. Something is calling out Java.

erm i didnt say it did , and as every java virus i have seen installs itself in the cache directory and launches from there they dont need java to run either.

Java has worked in chrome sinse the early days , chrome was notoriously buggy running java and still is , also there are many other programs that do require java to run and if two programs request it two instances will start up or three or four , most likely his running sevices

all he needs to do is kill all his startup processes and work back from there , if the java instances go problem solved , if not then scan for malware , but it wont be malware it never is , too many people on these forums seem to want to complicate simple problems by telling op's to install yet more apps and waste more time pointlessly scanning for something thats not there

its simple he is using too much ram and too many cpu cycles because his rig is running 143 processes when it should be running 43

All,

Sorry I wasn't able to log on yesterday, I ended up being on the go all day. My running processes are down to about 50 when I'm not running anything now, and my performance is much better. I uninstalled the Java Application, and now have no instance of java.exe running. I also uninstalled Trend Micro and installed MSE, as my subscription was ending in 2 weeks anyway to Trend Micro.

I appreciate all the help from everyone on this forum, and at this point I believe my issue is solved. Again, rep given to all who were hepful.
