A few weeks ago, computer kept on getting resetting, often when it is idle, never seems to do it when playing mass effect 2.

I then upgraded to service pack 1

Upgraded graphics card driver by
- Boot into Safe Mode with Networking
- Uninstall the Display Drivers including Catalyst Control Center
- Use Driver Sweeper to sweep the traces of the driver
- Reboot into normal mode
- Install the latest version ati radeon

Removed Norton and Replace with MSE:

Updated Realtek Ethernet

It seemd to fix it. But has come back. Particularly seems to happen when creating a system restore point.

windows 7 x64 with service pack 1.
- an OEM
What is the age of system (hardware)? 2 months and I have not re-installed the OS?

i5 760 with amd hd6870, 2 months old. All the requested files should be attached, any help very much appreciated?

All your crashes in March were from your video card, but it seems as if that problem is solved.

As for your freezing, I'm not to sure as to what's causing it. Have you run malware/virus scans to make sure there's no infections on your computer?

I did notice a lot network related errors in your event logs. I would try downloading the latest Realtek drivers and see if that helps - Realtek

Can you also run a system file check and report the results -

i updated the realtek driver a couple of weeks ago. Also I have an internet connection that does drop quite frequently due to poor line quality. I still get the crashes if physically disconnected so don't think that this is reason.

ran full scan using malwarebytes - all clean

ran sfc /scannow and reported "verification 100% complete Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files
but was unable to fix some of them."

I've attached the cbs.log file.

Why do you think I got dumps upto march 17th but nothing since.

I guess I'm getting to stage where think I should reinstall windows or return the px to maker. Only other thing is whether it is a dodgy driver somewhere and I should try "Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable"?

Any further help appreciated?

Please run this in a command prompt
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

Upload that file here. After you do that run system file check a couple more times

EDIT: I ran that my self with the log you provided. It doesn't show that there were any non-reparable files. Run the check again and upload a new CBS log.

ran sfc /verifyonly then ran sfc /scannow 5 times

Atcched the before and after filtered results from cds logs. You are right no errors with string "[SR]" but there are error messages from the scannow in cbs log. Also attached.

Hello James!

You are the victim of a known SP1 related issue. What has happened is that either 1 or 2 folder from the Winsxs store have been emptied. Neither the CBS.log nor SFC are quite up to scratch for this one.

Please install the System Update Readiness Tool, Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2, and then upload C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log.

I shall then help you with the fix.

Thanks a lot!

Richard

Hello again!

Thanks a lot for your Visitor Message! Really sorry that I wasn't around to reply (even though that I was marked as online)

When you say crashes, do you mean that it fails to install, with an error code? What error code are you receiving, if any?

Thanks a lot!

Richard

P.S. If you are receiving "Readiness Tool is already installed" or error code 0x8024800C,

please follow Step I ONLY from here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/111245-troubleshooting-system-update-readiness-tool.html

:D

turned off some pending windows updates that currently fail and booted into safe mode then back in normal mode.

did download again and installation ran fine. Now have a checksur.log attached. Seem to have 41 ati files missing which ties in with original problem that the VC upgrade may have fixed.

look forward to next steps?

Hello James!

Really sorry for the delay.

Should I try the driver sweeper backout for the ATi winsxs missing directories? Or is it more complicated? keen to try something tonight but obviously you have a life outside of this so happy to wait if you need more time.

Yes, please do try to restore from the backup. That is all you really have to do.

If you have lost your backups, please come back here, and I shall provide you with the required files (safer than what any other forums may be providing)

Thanks a lot!

Richard

Thanks to Niemiro. checksur identified missing files for graphics card in winsxs after driver sweeper mistakenly deleted them. Fixed them and both sur and scannow ran cleanly. All the windows updates worked and no crashes.

Spoke too soon, the crashes have started again now after windows updates ran. Seems linked to any windows update or creating restore points. Restored back to point immediately after clean sur and sfc but now have corrupt messages when runing sfc and SUR just crashes every time. Attached the CBS log after sfc. Any ideas? Seems linked with dodgy windows 7 installation. Should I try and repair windows 7 or just reinstall windows 7 from scratch?
