Please forgive but I do not know computer lingo or much about computers at all, so be gentle.

My problem is this: When I put my computer to sleep sometimes it will wake up on its own and there is no one in the room. If it is still off when I come into the room it will turn when I turn on a small fan I have next to my desk. I do not touch anything on the computer when I do this. What's causing this? Thanks.

I really don't think it's the mouse because it is not anywhere near the fans air. Then too, the computer wakes AS SOON AS I turn on the fan, as if it's a electrical power type of reaction. The computer and the fan are connected to the same plug but on different surge protectors. It doesn't happen when I turn on the light which is using the same surge protector as the fan.

Well, ok, so that was all greek to me. I will save it for someone with a computer brain. I was just wondering why it comes on when I turn on my little fan. It also comes on when I touch the space bar on my computer (I haven't tried any of the other keys) ... but it won't come on when I move the mouse no matter how much I move it. I was just wondering what was causing it and if it's going to cause me any trouble if I don't fix it?

No it's not a wireless mouse. The mouse will not wake it up. It's tuning on my fan or pressing the space bar that wakes it up.

An update ... not only does it turn on when I turn on my fan, and press the space bar ... it is also turning on when I turn OFF my fan. It's crazy.

it could be one of 3 things:

wake on LAN (most likely hackers)
auto updates
the ghost haunting your house is trying to use your computer
