Solved Confusing Failed/Successful Status After Update

Hi,

Today Windows Update unexpectedly downloaded 11 patches, mostly hotfixes. I'm still not sure why this happened as most of these patches were dated 2012/2013.
After installing them the laptop stayed on the "Preparing to configure your system..." screen for so long I thought it had frozen, but after an hour or so it rebooted and things seemed to be working normally.

On checking the Update History, it says "Updates were installed today at 21:11 (Failed), even though all of the patches are listed as "Successful" under Status. After checking again, something called Update for Windows is displaying as Failed, but I don't remember seeing this listed with the other 11 patches earlier.

Before rebooting I noticed the yellow Update icon was next to the Shut Down menu, and was still there after the reboot, but it dissappered a few minutes later while I was checking the Update History. I've run a check for updates and Windows seems to think I'm up to date - am I missing something important here?

Thanks,

Christina

I don't think you are missing anything but I'm not a expert.

All I would do is reboot 3 or 4 times today and check for Windows Updates manually and see if you have any problems.

Your Windows Updates might be trying to work around/with McAfee.
McAfee is normally not friendly with Windows 7.

From your specs.

Hi Layback Bear,

Thanks for the quick reply! :)

Glad I'm probably not missing anything important. I was just worried about the configuration taking so long as it's never taken anything like that long before.
I've heard McAfee isn't usually friendly with Windows 7, but for the most part things work normally despite McAfee being pre-installed on it.

I was going to add the "Failed" update came with this error code: 80244019
I've tried Googling it but can't find much and am not sure what it means.

Hi NoelDP,

Thanks for the link. The text in the right-hand corner says it applies to Windows Vista - presumably it applies to Windows 7 as well?

I've run a Malwarebytes scan and it found nothing. I also ran a full scan with McAfee Security Center 2014 which found nothing. Windows Update appears to be working as it downloaded and installed a newer version of KB295664 yesterday. Is there anything else I should check?

Yep, the instructions also apply to Windows 7.

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

Hi NoelDP,

Thanks for the response. After downloading and running SURT, I get a message saying "Do you want to install the following Windows Software update? (KB947821)? - is this normal?
Does SURT need Internet access to function?

Yes, the tool appears like an update - KB947821 - but actually 'installs' nothing, as it merely searches registry and selected ares of Windows for corruption and attempts to fix it when found.
Once downloaded, it needs no Internet connection to do its job.

Hi NoelDP

I've run both the SURT and a sfc scan (although this was a "verify only" version as I'm overly cautious). The results screen said violations were found so presumably I'll need to run the more thorough version.
I've attached the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file with this post.

The zipped CBS logs are on my desktop but they're currently at 62MB. I don't see how I'm going to get it down to 8MB even if I remove most of the cbsPersist files, as the newest one alone is over 8MB in size even though it's compressed.

In that case upload them to a fileshare site (preferably DropBox or OneDrive) and post a link.

That's fine...
There's no errors in either CheckSUR.log or CBS.log files.
Going back to the latest CBSPersist file shows just a single error - involving KB2952664 - which in theory can be ignored.

The windowsupdate.log shows that the major problem appears to be the connection to the MS servers for downloading updates. This is likely to be the result of McAfee getting in the way.

I would suggest uninstalling McAfee (at least temporarily), and running their MCPR tool, then installing MSE until we have the solution to your problems.

Download the McAfee removal tool from:

http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

Click Save, and save the file to a folder on your computer.
Navigate to the folder where you saved the file.
right-click on MCPR.exe and select 'Run as Administrator' to run the removal tool.

when complete, reboot.
After the reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

NETSH WINSOCK RESET

You'll be advised to reboot - do so.

Then try another Windows Update and see how that works.

Hi NoelDP,

Many thanks for checking the logs. :)

I'm not comfortable with uninstalling McAfee, mostly because I don't have anyone to ask for help just in case I mess things up. Currently it's not something I want to attempt unless not doing it is likely to cause more serious problem later.

Having said that, something odd happened last night and this evening. Shortly after connecting to the Internet, the Windows Update icon suddenly appeared in the system tray saying it was downloading updates. This first happened last night at around 11pm which I thought was strange, as it usually checks for updates around 6pm. It hung at 2% for a couple of minutes, then disappeared.
I checked Windows Update's status and it said Windows was up to date, but it also said the last installed update was at 18:02 yesterday and was "failed", even though there's nothing new listed in History after the KB947821 I ran to get the logs a couple of days ago.

The same thing happened this evening - Windows Update icon suddenly appeared in the system tray saying it was "downloading", only this time it got to 57% before disappearing. Windows Update still thinks I'm up to date regardless. I have no idea what's triggered this as I've never encountered it before - it looks as though it started a day or so after installing KB947821.

EDIT: About five seconds after I posted this, the windows Update icon reappeared and is still "downloading", and is still at 57%.

EDIT #2: Whatever it is, it's finally finished downloading. I recently changed Update settings to "Download, but allow me to choose whether to Install" instead of automatic install, but I can't see any evidence of the download anywhere. Windows Update still says it's up to date when I check...

You have MAJOR problems :(

I can't load the hive to correct the obvious errors - and my limited skills don't cover this type of recovery.

I can only suggest that you post the same files to another forum - Sysnative Forums - and hope that someone there can assist.

Hi NoelDP,

Thanks for the reply, worrying though it is.

If something is majorly wrong, why didn't it show up in the logs?

I've just checked Windows Update again and the status has updated, though I don't suppose this changes anything. It now says updates were last installed 02/08/2015 at 19:37 (failed). The failed updates look like three copies of "Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. driver update for AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series" all with the error code 80200010. Update also indicates there are two optional updates: one is an Intel Management Interface from 2013 and the other is a RealTek PCIe GBE family controller from 2011/2013.

I don't know what it is with Update offering me older patches - the only other time I remember seeing this was a week ago, which is what caused me to ask here in the first place.

I have no idea why I should have written what I did in post #14 - I may have posted it to the wrong thread :o

Let's backtrack a little...
I can understand you being wary of uninstalling McAfee - but it is known to cause problems occasionally, and the best way to fix it is to uninstall it, run the cleanup tool, and then either reinstall McAfee or an alternative.

The problem with your updates - 80200010 errors - is that the computer is having problems connecting with the MS Update servers. This is more often than not a problem with firewalls - or hardware. Since everything else appears to be OK, it's more likely the firewall.
Without intense study of the rules created by you and McAfee, it's difficult to work out where exactly the problem may lie - and my skills in that respect are limited anyhow. Uninstalling McAfee and reinstalling it as above will effectively reset the firewall so that it can be retrained, and assuming the problem was there in the first place it will go away.

As to why you're suddenly picking up older updates, they may have been hidden, but a reset of WU unhid them - or an update changed the hardware detection to allow these updates to be found.

Hi NoelDP,

That's a relief - I was starting to get really worried...

Do the logs say how long the 80200010 errors have been happening? I don't remember running into this sort of error on a regular basis in the past, unless it's been happening in the background without me realizing.

Oddly, the two older optional updates aren't displaying any more. Instead, there's one new "failed" update, which is an Upgrade to Windows Home. I'm not surprised that one failed as I haven't reserved a copy yet. But I;m a bit surprised it's attempting to download Windows 10 updates when I haven't chosen to upgrade yet.

Hi NoelDP,

Hope I'm not being annoying adding extra posts. I ran a sfc scan and it found errors it couldn't fix. I've tried looking through the sfcdetails log and the file(s) seem to be linked to Windows Telemetry Client, though they also seem to be linked to KB3068708, which is one of the updates that causes false mis-matches so I don't know if this is important or not.

Windows Update installed two updates today (KB2952664 and KB3075851) without any problems, but it also tries to install "Upgrade to Windows 10" every time I run an update check. Every time it fails with the error code 80240020. I'm not sure why it's doing this as I haven't reserved a copy of 10, unless it's being pushed out to anyone with a compatible system regardless.

Hi NoelDP,

Thanks for the link. Does this mean everyone with a compatible system will be (eventually) receiving this update regardless of whether they reserved a copy or not? If so, does this mean I'd have to update to 10?
