Connect XP to Win7 over domain

Hi,

At my office we have a domain based network with about 15 connected computers, all of them with Windows XP installed. Now we have installed a new computer with Windows 7 Professional, and connected it to the network. There is no problem to access shared files and printers from the Win7 machine, but no other computer on the network can access shared files on the Win7 machine. On any XP machine, I can see the Win7 machine among the other computers on the network, but when I try to access it an alert shows up, telling me that the computer isn't available (which it is).

On the Win 7 machine, in Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Advanced sharing settings, I have turned Network discovery, File and printer sharing and Public folder sharing on. (A weird thing is that I can't see an alternative to password protect shared files, but that's probably not the problem anyway since I'm not asked to type in a password when I try to access from a XP machine). And of course I'm not connected to any workgroup, but the domain we use on the network.

Just curious. Are you using "homegroup" for networking? Homegroup uses IPv6 and is primarily designed for win 7 only networks. You can see if this is the problem by creating a new network connection using the workgroup model.

No, I don't use the homegroup. I changed this in System Properties, where I switched from "Member of Workgroup" to "Member of Domain".

I'm not sure if this will work in a domain or not but this registry adjustment should allow you to access the Win 7 machine from the XP machines.

Solution is really easy just modify one key in registry on the Win 7 machine:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
create or modify 32-bit DWORD: LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy
set the value to: 1

Thank you for your reply, but I'm afraid it didn't work.

Other ideas? I guess this is a bit far-fetched, but is it likely that what's causing the problem is that the Win7 is a 64-bit version.

Of course! The firewall! Sometimes you forget the most obvious things. It wasn't the Win7 firewall that was blocking the XP machines (Windows firewall is the first thing I turn off on a new Windows installation), but ZoneAlarm. Thank you for the reminder!

Yes, I had to change the network status from Internet Zone to Trusted Zone in ZoneAlarm.
