Every ten to twenty (or even every few, on occasion) minutes, I hear the Windows USB disconnect sound (but never the 'Connect' equivalent). I have searched for a way to locate and fix the problem, but all I have come up with so far is to open up all the possible USB connection items in Device Manager and watch for changes as the sound occurs. Or just turn off the Windows USB warning sound option (which by now I am very tempted to do).
Well, watching Device Manager is a PC equivalent of watching paint dry - and even on the rare occasions when I am looking at the window when the disconnect happens, although the Device Manager window reloads (never any yellow exclamation marks, BTW), it's impossible to spot what the change was (if any).
Nothing to see in Event Manager - not even sure the event is being recorded (where would I see it? Nothing in hardware).
It happens with none of my external USB drives plugged in, by the way: and, apart from the sound itself, there is no other discernible effect... Wondering if there's any way of troubleshooting this a little bit more proactively, rather than just watching the Device Manager window (which, I see, is not going to lead to anything concrete)?
And, assuming I managed to track down the cause, why might Windows see the device, whatever it might turn out to be, as continually disconnecting?
Thank you!
Martin
