Core i5 750 - OC Results.

I'm a bit new to OCing (the last OC I did was in 2000 with an intel celeron from 400mhz to 1.0ghz) and this is my first "i5" OC. I am quite happy with the results and hope that maybe some people in this forum can help me with ideas to get a bit more out of this chip.

I went from the factor 2.66GHz to 3.80GHz.

The only things I really did in the bios I got from other forums / videos from youtube.

I used a bus speed of 190 and a multiplier of 20x to get my 3.80GHz.

I ran Prime95 Torture test for 14 Hrs and received no errors or warnings.

None of the 4 cores went over 67 C. They stuck around 62-65 C.

My question is why can I not go to 4.0GHz when the temp is well within the operating range? I bumped the buss speed to 200 and it runs prime95 for about 2 minutes, and the temp never gets over 65 after 2 minutes, and core #2 errors out.

I'm also using a Corsair H50 inside my Corsair 800D case. The H50 has 2 fans for push/pull effect. I have the fans bringing in cold air from outside the case like Corsair recommends, and with my case, it does not affect the internal temperature at all. The case handles it quite well.

Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions.

The other thing to look at is the core voltage. The multiplier is the best way to OC, but eventually you will hit a cap that the CPU doesn't have enough power to run. So the power going to the CPU has to be increased. In the thread mentioned, the user upped the core voltage to 1.52V which is way high.

If you up it just a little you will have enough power to go up in multipliers I think.

I think! (I don't do OC'ing) so I am not a pro, I just know computers and have researched it.

I soft OC my laptop from 2.13 to 2.3 with the built-in software (Asus Extreme Turbo)

What you are getting from a 2.66 to 3.8 Is a great OC. you can probably press it further, but the returns diminish and you risk getting higher temps and adding more wear and tear on your CPU and other components.

I manually set my core V to 1.392v and it is running prime95 right now and no errors. I think you were right about the voltage Thorsen.

Lomai, that thread lead me to consider voltage which I think is going to let me run at 4.0ghz from now on. My little corsair H50 does a good job and this i5 750 runs like a champ. 4.0ghz is actually noticeably faster than 3.8.

Thanks so much, how do I mark a thread solved?

Well I thought it was solved....
Same core that error-ed out prior to changing the core v error-ed out again, but lasted much longer that before. lasted 32 minutes as compared to 5 minutes previously. Any idea what would I could change to help it not fail? Bump the voltage to 1.4v ?

I would be careful and read more info on the core voltage. Also worker 3 in Prime test said it had a fatal error. Is there a way to get that error from logs?
