Corrupt Registry

Evening Gents,

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

I was defragmenting my hard drive and when I restarted my PC it launched into Windows Startup Repair, and, bad news it could not find a problem - so I went to restore the system and all the System Restore points have been deleted (probs due to defragmenting, or rather defragmenting failure).

The error cited by the Startup Repair is 'Registry is Corrupt'. I booted into Safe Mode, and ran the Little Registry Repair program and it found around 100+ registry problems, which it repaired all but 4. The system still does not boot normally. I did ran SFC \SCANNOW and it said that there were some unfixable problems with system files. I also ran a memory check for the sake of ruling it out and there are no problems there. I would just repair the installation through the install, but low and behold you can't do that from Safe Mode, thank you Microsoft.

What else can I do? I know a reinstall may seem like the easiest option but I would rather avoid it by all means.

Cheers,

Have you tried chkdsk /r? Have you tried booting to the Windows Recovery CD (that hopefully, you made)? You could run a repair install from the original installation CD.

Try using System Restore to go back before the problem happened. You should be able to access it from Safe Mode.

Yup tried that, no avail. I don't have a recovery disk (my bad), only the install disk. I can't run a repair install as I can't boot into normal windows, just Safe Mode.

All System Restore points were lost during the occurence of this problem.

You don't have to boot into Windows in any mode (nor do you need a recover disk) to do a repair with the original DVD. You simply boot to it, and when you reach the screen with the Install button, go to the lower left and use the link to repair Windows instead. In the window that next appears, use the first option to perform the repair. If that fails, then you could use the option below that to restore the system from an image...if you made one. If you made a backup image with some other program, then that is the next step, if the previous ones didn't work. All that is left after that (assuming that you didn't use some third party program to backup the registry, such as my reg cleaner is capable of, is to start over from scratch.

Yes but when you boot into the DVD and click the repair link it says that the repair must be initiated from within windows, ie. Booting into windows normally and loading the DVD and running the Autoplay file.

That's odd, because it doesn't say that on my system. After it detects W7, and I clicked next, it produced a screen with multiple repair options. The first was to fix startup, but I doubt that would extend to the registry, still it's worth a shot. I think that the next was to restore via a restore point, but since you apparently don't have any, that isn't likely to help, but I would make sure that it doesn't see something that wasn't apparent within Windows. The third was to recover via a System Image, but as I said before, you would have to have made one for that to be of any use. The last two options wouldn't be of any help. Unfortunately, the repair options didn't include overwriting the OS, like with XP, so unless someone can think of something that I haven't, it would appear that you need to reinstall from scratch.

Sorry I was thinking of when you click "Upgrade" because then it says that Windows must be running for it to upgrade.

Yes, i see when you click that the Startup Repair etc dialog appears, but none of those options fix the issue.

Since, posting this I now can't even access Safe Mode...

How am I best to rescue my data so Windows doesent just blindly overwrite it all?

A http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html?ltr=R in Windows 7 is run from the desktop, not boot mode. It is an Upgrade over itself, keeping all programs, files and settings in place but reinstalling the OS.

The Repair console on the booted DVD or Repair disk is completely different, offering Startup Repair, Restore from a Backup Image, Command Line, and System Restore from boot mode.

Repair Install hasn't been run from boot mode since XP.

One last attempt before Repair Install is to run sfc /scannow which will check system file integrity. It may repair the missing files. If it can't it will tell you.

You should also try MacGyvr's suggestion to System Restore which is in Accessories>System Tools.

But I can't to the desktop to launch the DVD to start a repair install...
I have tried sfc /scannow and the are some errors it can't fix. All the system restore point are sadly not there.

How would I run this program without accessing a usable desktop? I ran Little Registry Cleaner before I was locked out of safe mode, but no RegistryFix.

Last Know Configuration also fails to boot.

Have you tried running a Repair install from Safe Mode?

If not, boot into your Win7 DVD Repair Console, click throught to Recovery tools list and run Startup Repair 3 times to try to get Win7 started so you can run a Repair install from desktop.

Windows will not let you run a repair install from Safe Mode - it must be a normal desktop.

I will try startup repair 3 times. When I boot into Safe Mode it boots to the initilizing drivers screen and hangs at CLASSPNP.sys. Joy!

On that same Recov Tools list in DVD REpair console is System Restore. Have you tried it from there?

I have tried that but thre are no restore points.

Right the 3 times startup repair didn't fix it either. Any ideas?
