The CPU was added by me last year, the original CPU was a celeron.

Like I said I have been told the reason is because the i945G chipset is only a 32 bit chipset, and as such is only capable of 32 bit computing.

That sounds bogus.

Intel claims 64 bit OS support, which means it can use CPUs with what used to be called the EM64T instruction set. On the other hand, it's limited to 4GB of physical RAM, so there goes one strong motivation for installing X64.

What your saying isn't true, I have just took out a 2GB stick of RAM and replaced it with a 1GB stick which gives me 3GB, and if what your saying is true my PC would say that less than 3GB is available but it doesn't look.

Sorry, I said that wrong. I meant if you have 4Gb installed in a 32-bit system, you will never see all 4Gb as available.

It cannot be the chipset either. In post 25 (bottom), the OP says that he is using a dedicated graphics card with 512MB.
I am puzzled. The only other thing I can think of is that he never switched to the dedicated graphics card in the BIOS.

For example, consider a computer that has an Intel 975X chipset that supports 8 GB of address space. If you install 8 GB of RAM, the system memory that is available to the operating system will be reduced by the PCI configuration requirements. In this scenario, PCI configuration requirements reduce the memory that is available to the operating system by an amount that is between approximately 200 MB and approximately 1 GB. The reduction depends on the configuration.

The address space has to come from somewhere, and if the chipset only supports up to 4 GB and 4 GB is installed it gets taken from there regardless of 32 bit or 64 bit OS.
