Hey, service manuals saved my butt more than once, no lie.
There IS a difference between taking apart a Dell Inspiron 1501 and a Dell Inspiron 1525, believe it or not. A big difference.

Such as a 20oz hammer, and a 45oz hammer.

I should probably post something more productive...
Service manuals are good for swatting flies. And only used as per their intended use as a last resort.
Or if the machine is too good to screw up first time.
I'd never take a socket or spanner set to a 2008 BMW or Audi without knowing what to do.
But with my 1991 Honda, I wont feel so guilty if I have left over parts.

My garage is still approaching maximum capacity... :huh:

I am more of the mindset of "If I can't figure it out myself, THEN I will check the manual."

A signatures I've used here was, "when all else fails use the impact solution.. a 5 pound sledgehammer works best"
I know what you mean.. I stopped working on cars because it's too damn frustrating. At least you don't have to worry about knuckbusters or bolt patterns and torque specs when reassembling a laptop.

I have a 1991 Honda. I dont worry about those things either. If it goes, it goes. If it doesnt, do it again.
I'l worked on several of these particular cars, so I've already figured it out from experience.
But with an Audi, no idea. Consult the manual.

As for PC's and Laptops... PC's are all the same. Laptops are all similar.
Its like that toy you used to play with as a kid.

If the component doesnt fit into the slot, then it doesnt go there.

I can generally figure it out, but I stick to the manual since it's good practice

If something is broken beyond repair, I love to take it apart and put it back together, to see if I can get it all back with no missing parts . Having a sheet of clean fabric/paper next to you to lay out screws and stuff is very handy.

I check the manual whenever I take apart any laptop I havent worked on before.. if I can get one.. not all manufacturers make them easy to find. Sometimes the chassis will look identical to one of a previous model#, but everything inside has been redesigned. At least HP and Dell freely provide service manuals.. which is strangely convenient because most of the laptops I work on are HPs and Dells, with Toshiba coming in as a distant 3rd.. Most of the other brands either rarely get sold, rarely have problems or don't last long enough for the warranty to expire

For a while, I've noticed my laptop wouldnt quite sit right when the lid was closed. It was only at work today when I found what the culprit was: a loose screw holding the hinge to the lid.

So sure enough, out with the tweezers and a one-size-fits-all screwdriver...
Never pulled this one apart and I didnt have a manual. But its all straight forward... remove the screws, and see what happens...
10 minutes later,
Found the loose screw... so tightened it up.
10 minutes later,
Oh, and while the cover was off, I gave it a quick dusting with etch primer. Because the plain black looked too...plain...

Just goes to show, 9/10 times you dont need a manual. You only need a bit of common sense, intuition, and patience.

Plus the added satisfaction of "can do" is invaluable but these qualities are individual and your interest like your mileage may vary as they say! Great job on the opening customization and closing looks very successful !

Not bad, lol. Took my friends laptop apart once to reset the CMOS, which required taking EVERYTHING out to get at the CMOS battery (Dell Inspiron 1525) and upon putting it back together, I forgot to attach one wire... Well, I thought everything was kosher until I realized that the wire I forgot to attach was the wire going from the power button to the system board, the one with the CMOS and CPU on it...

Thats right. Nothing beats the satisfaction of going in with no, or limited, knowledge and getting to it to work.
Maybe getting it to work 2nd time is better, then you know you've troubleshooted well.

Don't know of any other programs to suggest, but have you tried blowing out the ports with canned compresed air? Laptops especially older ones tend to have a great deal of build up of fibers and dust due to user using them on their laps or other cloth or fiber surfaces.
I'm pretty sure if you were to take it apart you would be amazed at how much dust ect is built up inside of it.

I agree with Fabe, my uncle suggested I should get some form of a dust cover for my netbook, and occasionally take the netbook apart to remove any build-up of dust within the computer etc. More Dust = Over Heating
