Cpu temp emergency!!!

I apologize in advance if this is not the right place, or indeed, forum for this but I really need some IMMEDIATE help.

My overall CPU temperature is reading 112C whereas both cores are reading in at about 61C using PC Wizard. :shock:

If these readings are right, something is very, very, very wrong with that picture, besides the fact that the maximum temperature this particular CPU (T6600) can handle is 105C.

Should I be very concerned about this? I have only had this computer for about 5 months now. It is still under warranty for another 7 months or so, but this model is discontinued so they couldn’t replace it even if this was enough to warrant a total system replacement (God only knows what else this temperature could have already damaged irreparably – if the temperatures are accurate).

What should I do?! Sorry to panic, but this is scary as hell!


Now granted, I WAS playing a game at the time. However, low settings and low resolution on a 3 year old game on THIS computer should NOT, NOT, NOT spike my temperatures up this high! And only after 15 minutes!

I play Sims 3 without issues, and Oblivion isn't a very intensive game in this day and age and "can you run it" said I should be able to play on HIGH settings with everything this beast has in it.

What is going on here?!

Ok, first thing you need to do is get another temp monitoring program.
Core Temp or Speedfan should do you fine
SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

Furthermore, your max operating temp is 105, so, for the sake of not killing it trying to find a solution place it on solid object with a bit of air flow under it while you double check temps

Ok, Speedfan right now is reading both core 0 and core 1 as about 36/37C.

PC Wizard is reading core 0 and core 1 at about 53/54C

I'm going to go back into the game on the same settings and come back out in 10 minutes to see where we're at...

But before I do, which temperature reading counts? The temperatures of the cores or the temperature of the overall CPU?

Pretty much the temp overall. But know that the overall temp of the CPU is not always exactly Core 0 + Core 1.

Install coretemp aswell, see what that says, PCWizard can be a bit retarded at times with some chipsets.

Ok, Core 0: 45C Core 1: 46C

To get the real overall temperature, I'd just add 45C to 46C right?

In that case, after 10 minutes, overall temp: 91C.


Could this have just been a fluke occurrence? The fans pretty much stay on their highest rpm during any gameplay... and it does get pretty damn hot underneath about where the CPU sits, but it's not enough to generate a decent enough heat to break a sweat at lol.

I'll try core temp now...

EDIT: core temp says 43C and 44C right now, and SpeedFan says 38C and 39C... which do you suppose is correct? lol

EDIT again, there's no "overall" temp. listing... so... what's the precise formula to calculate that, if it's not exactly as simple as "x + y =" ?

No, I think you misunderstood my earlier post. On Speedfan it should look like this:
CPU: xxC
Core 0: xxC
Core 1: xxC
Your CPU temp is not Core 0 + Core 1

SpeedFan only shows me core 0 and core 1. Is there a special something I need to enable to see the overall?

No, it should show it by default. It may very well be your sensor that doesn't allow it. Have you ensured to run it as administrator?

Your Core temps are the right ones.

Actually, you don't want an "overall" temperature with your CPU because it tends to be less accurate, basically it takes the temperatures of the core and then does a bit of technical wizardry figuring out distances etc. from the actual cores to where the sensor is to give you a rough temperature. Core Temps are bang on normally, because the Sensor is actually ON the Core. that is your CPU temperature.

45-46 degrees under load is nothing to worry about. Intel actually do say that their Sensors are not very accurate that low anyway, in fact they say that anything under 40C can only be read as "a temperature under 40C" the sensors become more accurate the hotter they get. they are at their most sensitive at "throttling point" (about 90C I think)

I am a "full" Admin, this is the only account I have set on this computer... weird.

It also doesn't show fans or anything else other than just those two cores. Hmm.

I've never been able to do the "run as" thing on here to force Admin on a program. It doesn't show, despite the fact that it should. Could just be me, but I'm used to doing that in XP not 7.

Ok, so basically the absolute maximum temperature of 105C is in the actual CPU cores then?

Intel doesn't say WHAT temperature reading is for that maximum... funny lol.

Sorry for the triple post, I get what you're saying now.

TJunction = Core Temp. (Core 0 and Core 1). And at TJunction Max, the system will shut down.

Maximum TJunction for this CPU is 90C (194F) - the 105C must be the "overall" temp.

So I don't have to worry about anything getting fried unless the temps creep up to about 80F, then it's time to shut down and let it cool off before the manual cut-off TJunction process.

Pretty close to being correct on that? If so, I'll make it a habit to save and exit the game every half hour to an hour to check and let it cool off a bit before resume anyway.

Quick question though, those 45-46C temps your seeing, are they your idle temps? They seem a bit warm for Idle

I think they are. I'm downloading and installing some updates to Windows right now and the temperatures are reading about 54C and 59C (Core Temp), 50C and 51C (SpeedFan).

I do live out in the desert/valley region though, so I'm sure the environmental temperatures have a lot to do with the computer's overall internal temperatures. It's probably about 88F here right now (31C)... wouldn't be surprised at all if this is why it's so hot inside of this thing right now.

I wouldnt worry too much then. If your Cores actually reach the Tjunction then I'd consider some better cooling. Might be worth looking into anyway, cooler chips are faster chips

Yeah definitely, but there's not much to be done about that for Notebooks. Going to probably have to stop using it pretty quick here, for it's own protection, as we can occasionally get up to 110F (43C) out here around now!

I almost bought one of those... but most of them suck the air away from the Notebook's intake vents rather than into them. Doesn't sound right to me. I have actually put the styrofoam blocks that shipped with the Notebook underneath it and it already runs dramatically cooler than if I put it on a flat surface by itself (which I did before I did the other thing and it did indeed run considerably hotter). I'd wager this is the main reason why Notebook cooler pads work so great anyhow lol.

But yeah, this hopefully won't be a problem anymore soon as I plan on building a proper gaming rig in early 2011, after my $1,200 earnings of doing seasonal work. Notebooks just can't take the heat of games sadly.

And... the game's crashed out to desktop twice now because of, I'd imagine, overheating. CPU temps never get above 67C though so perhaps its something else heating up causing that to happen? Running out of ideas for the immediate term...

How about graphics overheat? I know that Notebooks dont really have a graphics card as such, but the integrated components can still get hot.

That's what I was thinking... or else something to do directly with the motherboard. I notice it gets blazing hot towards the front-right on the bottom. No idea what's sitting there, but whatever it is it is very, very, very hot.

I tried looking up what this thing looks like inside, but couldn't find anything so I'll likely never know. =/
