Just wondering what is a good base line temp for a CPU at idle and at load?

Currently my Phenom™ II x2 3.1 Ghz sits at 40 c at idle.

That seems quite high. The temp that matters is the core temp under load

Slimmanx,
Welcome to SF. The other important factor is the ambient temp. It seems a little high to me as well and I would ask how long since you blew out the fans and fins of the case and CPU cooler? Also how long has the cooler been mounted to the CPU as well as the full spec's of components involved?

^This.
Temps can occasionally can be quite inaccurate at idle, and are often more accurate the closer ot TjMax you get.

And in some cases, sensors can stick at the lower end. My old Q9650 would do that. report 40C at idle, even though it was actually much cooler.

The important thing is to watch those load temps. If everything is good while under 100% load, dont worry, as this is all that really matters.

But, it showing 40C at idle isn't anything to really be worried about if load is good.

Its a custom build. Just finished it like last week. So I'm thinking that it could be because the thermal paste really hasn't had time to set yet. I just updated my system specs. The cooler for the cpu seems to be fine. Everyone may check out the cooler Amazon.com: AMD Socket AM3/AM2+/AM2/1207/939/940/754 Copper Base/Aluminum Heat Sink & 2.75" Fan w/Copper Heatpipes & 4-Pin Connector: Electronics. All Thermal paste is different. Some could need a week to 2 weeks to fully cure. And it may need to have a few hot->cold cycles as well. meaning a overnight shutdown at some point.

Then others, are what they are with no cure time at all (like MX2)

Depending what you have, it very well may get a bit better with time.
