CPU temperature

GA P55A UD3P, I5 760, Win 7 Ultimate x64 OEM, CPU fan set to max rpm. All temps in Celsius. No over clocking.

New build and I am concerned about CPU temperature.
I have set and reset the stock cooler three times now using Arctic Silver.

I measure temps with Core Temp. Have calibrated Core temp to correspond to the temperature shown in Bios. 40 degrees at boot up. Probably Tcase. Core Temp also shows the Lynnfield as having a max Tj of 99 degrees. I take this as max core temp.

When prime 95 is run in combination mode for 20 minutes my high low is 36 - 84. I suppose core temps are 5 or 10 degrees more.

The tests where run with front and back panels off, in an air conditioned room, 24 degrees, with the air conditioner blowing directly on the motherboard. So computer case temperature, or ambient, should not be a problem.

I have tried Fan Speed and it seems very inaccurate with core readings of 21 at idle. My bios says the Tcase is 40. Even this seems improbable. If the CPU case is 40 at idle then the core temps must be
45 or 50. Gee that seems like a high temperature to start at.

I don't know if the temps are accurate. Can anyone tell me how to
get accurate readings or inform me of what I am doing wrong?

Boy there is a lot of controversy, information and misinformation on this subject. I have been searching for data an answers.

Pretty bad when I am the only one to reply to my own post. I suppose that is because it is such a "squirly" subject.

I just had to make some SWAG decisions and go with them on my CPU heat (problem?).

The Speed Fan and Core temp programs for monitoring temperatures gave wild values. My own bios tells me
I idle at 50C on Tc (T on CPU case). I don't believe it.

Room temp is 24C and the front and back panel are off with the air conditioner blowing right at the motherboard. I have reset the CPU, stock heat sink, with Arctic Silver, 3 times and am pretty sure it is as good a setting as possible.

I figure at idle Tc is 5c above ambient and Tj (T of core) is 10c above that. My SWAG estimate for core temp at idle then, is 40C.

The Real Temp program gives me nearly that figure and I calibrate it to 40C for idle core temp.

Running Prime95 for 20 minutes shows the cores level off at 20 - 21C lower than Tmax. Tmax for the i-760 is 99C.

I will take this as good as I can do and be done with it. I do not think the CPU will overheat.

Finish!! Kaput!!!

intel always runs hotter all intel plus you had the panels off that really tells you nothing

You should be running prime in a sealed case seems like to me your unit will hit tj max right away if you seal it up if it gets that hot and you are open with massive circulation and the ac on to boot

Also if it has a tjmax to 99 thats pretty high mine is 72 C yet im running amd no comparison there

you might need to invest in better cooling a stock fan cooler won't cut it look into water cooling you might be able to fix the issue a couple suggesions also the cpu could be faulty if it is out of control with heat issues or the heatsink simply is not on corrrectly

I know from experience intel is a fireball in a box you need good cooling to keep it stable

I have an i7-960 quad core cpu. I got it from a friend and it came with a massive air cooler. I also have two case fans. Using SpeedFan the system is stable in the 45c-50c range. I was able to configure SpeedFan to automatically control the speed of the fans. Given the app's name you would think it would be easy, but it was a real bear LOL. I also run an app called Granola, which is meant to save electricity but I believe has the secondary effect of keeping the cpu cooler by dropping it to idle faster. The bottom line is find out what the official temp range is for your cpu and if you can't stay within it I suggest getting a better cooler.
