CPU Usage Flaw or Memory Leak

Hello,

I am experiencing a strange memory leak or CPU flaw where my CPU usage randomly shoots up to 90-100% even when no applications or programs are open. This can happen anytime from immediately after a fresh restart or after several hours of the computer running. I have read some threads about people having similar issues, however what they described was quite different from what I am experiencing because it does not appear as if a process under Task Manager is causing it. I also tried many of the solutions that users on the forum have posted such as disabling indexing within my hard drive, but unfortunately, it has not helped the issue to become resolved at all. I just recently purchased my computer, which is a Dell laptop, in September 2009. When I bought it, it came with Vista and later I upgraded to 7.

Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo T9900 @ 3.06 GHz
RAM - 4.00 GB
System type - Windows 7 64 bit
Display - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670

Does the usage stay at 90-100% for long periods? Several minutes?

It stays at 90-100% until I restart my computer.

Is this a stock install of Windows 7 from Dell? Along with all of Dell's preinstalled software?

Well it was Vista then I upgraded to 7 from Vista. I don't believe I had any software on my computer when I first got it.

Edit: I did have Dell's preinstalled software such as Dell DataSafe Online, Dell WebCam Central, and all that.

Any help would be appreciated.

What TASK or process is consuming this 90-100% CPU usage?

Are you saying that the PERFORMANCE tab in Task Manager showing a CPU GRAPH will show different cumulative CPU usage than individual tasks/PIDs on the standard Task Manager screen?

When looking at the task list, make sure that "Show processes from all users" is checked?

If that still doesn;t show it, open the resource monitor (button on one of the task manager tabs) and look under the CPU tab, the offending process should show up under there.

Process Explorer is another good tool to pin it down.

Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service is often a culprit for this.

Open Start menu, type services.msc and press "enter".

Go down to Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service and double click on it and Stop it and then disable it.

It's used for when you transfer media between your Xbox 360 and your PC, so if you do use a 360 for this, then set the service to "manual" if you want.

Thats the thing, Task Manager does not show any process using up high amounts of memory even in the Resource Monitor.

I had already disabled Window Media Player Network Sharing before I made this thread, that did not fix the issue.

Strange, i'm sharing over my private home network the "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" and it does take me 5000kb only!

I suspect more something running in the backgroung like an online scanner common to firewalls/Av software....or quickscan when updates virus definition....

Apparently I'm also having issues with my Physical Memory, it just shot up to 70% and then down to 40%, but that is still really high for a computer that only has a browser open....

Look at Task Manager and select all the columns related to MEMORY. Sort (descending) by either working-set or total memory and see where it's all going.

It may help if you followed some simple request, such as post your system specs...

And make sure you click the "Show processes from all users" check box. By default you only see maybe 1/3 of what's actually running in the task list. The thing that's taking up memory might not be listed by default.

Also on the performance tab, click the resource monitor, then the memory tab and you ca then sort all processes by memory there too, it'll give yo ua little more information.

Also, the main problem is that Task Manager does not show any process thats taking up a lot of memory or CPU, thats the main reason why I am so frustrated and I am forced to restart my computer any time it happens.

Someone please provide some assistance, I would really appreciate it.

Did you check out the memory tab in the resource monitor?
