Creating Raid 0

Hi,

I just tried to install Windows 7 fresh and create a raid 0 across 4 of my hard drives but when I tried to load the raid drivers they were showing and so I highlighted them and even did it individually but they didn't load and when it continued to carry out the install it couldn't because of no raid drivers loading. The box was also checked for incorrect drivers.

Any ideas how to overcome this anyone?

If you want reliable and useful respones you should fill out your system specs and explain your problem a bit more succinctly.

Include the following:

All hardware specs including your RAID hardware
Version of Windows 7
Versions of BIOS, Make & Model of Motherboard.

I am trying to do it with software. I don't have any PCI-E raid card.

I realised that I had not made the raid 0 in the configuration. Long time since I did raid.

So I got it to load the drivers but I am getting the following message and error:

Windows is unable to install to the selected location. Error 0x80300001

All is okay now. I created a partition and it created a small one also to store windows stuff and it is installing Windows 7 as we speak. I will update later to tell how it went.

I hope I'm not too late, but I could give you plenty of reasons why RAID0 is not a good idea. Some of those could be debated, but it is definitely NOT a good idea to use software RAID. There's an old saying...never let software do hardware's job. If you don't have an onboard SATA controller capable of doing RAID...don't even bother. You're only setting yourself up for lost data in the future, without any of the (debatable, negligible) benefits that a hardware RAID0 setup would give you.

Well I have set it up and all is okay so far. I am using an EvGA 680i motherboard which I have had for a few years now and it is very well made and is designed for the enthusiast so I am going to put my faith in it.

I only ever and quote EVER have my operating system and programs running on the C drive so if I lose that then it is not a problem. I write or should I say try to write electronic music and the synthesizers that come with them nowadays have huge libraries so I wanted to keep them under one roof. The originals are backed up elsewhere.

So it is early days yet and I will drop in every now and again to let you know how it is going.

Some of the stuff you guys are saying about RAID 0 are just too funny. No matter what your harddrive configuration you need to back up your important files.

I've been running RAID 0 for three years now without a single problem or failure. The performance is much better than a single HDD, no comparison in fact. Just looking at SSD's now for even better performance.

Loading the drivers is as simple as starting the machine then hitting F10 with the Windows CD in the boot drive. Navigate using the arrow keys. It's really simple to set up a stripped array.

The deal is with software raid is that you will see no performance gains if you use more than 3 drives in RAID 0. After that you need hardware RAID if you want more performance. I've seen countless tests proving this.

In synthetic testing, sure. In real-world testing, no, you'll see small gains in specific areas only, and a decrease in performance in others, such as seek times. That's why the RAID0 hype died a few years ago, thanks to many well-known and respected review sites and their detailed testing, such as Anandtech, who led the way to the myth's debunking.

I've seen countless tests proving this.

As have I, which were responsible for the death of the RAID0 myth. It doesn't pay off in a workstation environment for the vast majority of users.
