Critical update downloaded but hung on install

Ok what does one do when NOTHING will uninstall Office 2007? I have run ever option and the operation never finishes.... somewhat like the update installation. It starts but just stops after a bit. There are no error messages. It just stops responding.

I attempted to run these uninstall tools you pointed me to but as I indicated they all hung just like the updates were hanging. Are those the cleanup tools you are talking about? Also Security Essentials is now finding JavaCVE-2012-4681 and telling me I need to remove it. It too hangs about 3/4 of the way through and I have to use Task Manager to stop it.

...so you've tried running the fixit in How to troubleshoot problems when you install or uninstall programs on a Windows-based computer ??

It sounds as if your system may be heavily infected/infested.
You should consider scanning with a good offline AV - What is Windows Defender Offline? before doing anything else, assuming you have a clean machine on which to download it (even if not, it can help sometimes)

Yes I ran the FixIt and it also hung up and didn't finish. I'm downloading the Windows Defender Offline now and will run it. I'll let you know what happens.

I installed and ran Windows Defender Offline. After seven hours of scanning it found the exploit Java CVE 2012 4681 that was found earlier. I clicked to delete it and even though it said it might take a few seconds to remove it actually took over an hour but apparently did finally remove it. I then tried running the uninstall program from Control Panel to remove Office 2007. It has now been running for over an hour and there is no sign that the program is actually being uninstalled. Any suggestions? I really need to get Office reinstalled so I have email for my business and access to the other Office programs.

There are manual removal instructions in the KB link.... under Method 4
They aren't for the faint-of-heart! - but they should work.

The instructions look a little daunting.. that's why I didn't try method 4 the first time around. I think I'll wait till morning after a good nights sleep before diving into that one.

Well I decided to give "FixIt" another try yesterday in case I bailed out and gave up on it too soon. It got to step 1 and stayed there for ten hours without any other progress so I bailed out again. I started running the Method 4 manual removal of Office 2007 this morning and got to Step 1 where it has you click on the Subject then type 340 in the width. It says it may take several minutes for the subject to appear. It's been almost an hour and I'm still waiting for the subject to appear. I'm beginning to think Windows 7 is corrupt. Everything seems to hang and not finish.

It does sound as if there's something majorly wrong.
A repair install *may* fix it - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html?ltr=R - but I'd work on the basis that you will need to do a clean install. At least that way you won't lose anything you're not expecting to.
