Hi,

Recently I got myself a new computer and decided to use Win 7 Home Premium 64bit as the OS. The problem I'm having right now is that I can't play my old games such as CS 1.6 and Battlefield 2.

Each time I click the shortcut or even the game launcher itself, the game would not launch. I checked the Task Manager and the game appears in the process but quickly disappear.

The Event Viewer shows this :
Faulting application name: hl.exe, version: 1.1.1.1, time stamp: 0x43712ff5
Faulting module name: hl.exe, version: 1.1.1.1, time stamp: 0x43712ff5

Hope you guys can help me with this. Thanks.

Hi rippa, welcome to the forums :)

Have you tried downloading any patches that may be available?

Also, try downloading the latest drivers for your GFX card and DirectX

Hi OS, thanks for your reply.

I did what you have suggested earlier but the problem is still there. :(

I wonder if the problem lies at my RAM because of the 0xc0000005 exception. But I think 2GB is more than enough to play CS 1.6. Anyone with the same problem like mine?

2GB is the minimum recommendation for windows 7, for 64 bit and to run games, I would recommend at least 4gb.

The Stop 0x50 message indicates that requested data was not in memory. The system generates an exception error when using a reference to an invalid system memory address. Defective memory (including main memory, L2 RAM cache, video RAM) or incompatible software (including remote control and antivirus software) might cause Stop 0x50 messages.

I recommend running memtest to see if you have a faulty stick or two of RAM.

Thanks for the suggestion LiquidSnak. I'll do the test and post the results later.

Hi guys,

I did the Memtest that LiquidSnak suggested on all 4 RAM slot and fortunately there's nothing wrong with my only stick of RAM, and all the slots on my motherboard.

Now we know it's something else that did the 0xc0000005 thingy. Maybe I should buy another stick. Do you guys got any other suggestions?

Thanks.

What are you running for A/V software?

It would not hurt you if it's in your budget to get another stick of RAM. Try to get the same model number, and you will likely be able to run dual channel, which will help performance quite a bit.

I'm using avast! Free AntiVirus, and the Gaming Mode is on.

Yeah, maybe I should buy another one. But it still bugs me. I can run Crysis and NFS Undercover but not CS 1.6. Weird. Anyway, thanks for your help, LiquidSnak.

Unfortunately a lot of old(er) game will not run on Windows 7, let alone Windows 7 x64, especially if the game is 10+ years old. Counter Strike was originally released in 1999! -Counter-Strike - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yes, the 1.6 mod was released in 2009, but note that the supported OS's don't include Vista or Window 7, let alone X64 -Download Counter-Strike 1.6 - Counter-Strike (CS) 1.6 is a MOD for Half-Life that is set in a teamplay mode.

With Battlfield 2 - Battlefield 2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, you might be able to get that to run if you try it in compatibility mode - See this tutorial on running in Compatibility Mode.

I would highly suggest you make sure you update your DirectX files by going here and getting the latest DX9 version - Update your Direct X files

One other thing - the Steam versions of Counter Strike/Half Life works a heck of a lot better than the physical disk does under Vista/Windows 7. However these games use Valve’s Source Engine and can only be purchased through Steam, or with special collectors edition of Half-Life (good luck finding those in box form).

Anyways here's an example of what I'm saying - I installed Half-Life from my disk and it struggled to run, yeah I was lucky to get it installed on Vista but it crashed constantly, yet Half-Life: Source through Steam ran great on Vista x64 without issue. Haven't tried it on 7 yet.

My point? Get the Source version of Counter Strike, you "may" have better luck.

If you do decide to purchase through Steam make sure you get the Source version as it is possible to purchase those games without the Source engine! Make sure the title has "Source" in it....

Half-Life: Source
Counter Strike: Source

Now, If you have the steam version, and it's crashing, well.... you might want to have a look at my Tips on Troubleshooting Game Issues

@ LiquidSnak, in this instance there's no need to run memtest. It's more about compatibility than memory issues.

Peace

Hope this helps

BTW here's a compiled list of games compatible with Windows 7 - Windows 7 Game Compatibility List

Battlefield 2 works on 64-bit according to the list, and Counter Srike (Steam version) works on 64-bit as well.
