First I would like to say hello since I am new here.
My issue is what it says in my title. I am sure I have some issues with the CBS.log as well.
I have tried to correct the problem myself in multiple ways, but failed to do so.
The system runs great except...sfc produces the following error when initialized.
* Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation

I can not download Windows updates and there are a few updates that after installing, request that I download and install again, and again, and again.

I have run Windows6.1-KB947821-v24-x64.msu

I have tried to run a repair and upgrade with Windows disk, but it fails to complete.

I have tried to run over SP1 with SP1, it fails.

I have researched this issue I am having with
*Updates
*SFC
*Blank turn-windows-features-on-or-off-optionalfeaturesexe
*0x80073712 - ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT
and I know these are all connected with this issue.
I am not ready to give up and create a new install to fix it because that is giving up. The system is well maintained and I am familiar with it and know it well. I work with the registry often and very comfortable with making changes. I would like to get this problem fixed and I am ready to work with someone that can help me to do this.
I have searched this forums posts for my issue and it seems each one I start to read, the communication breaks right when the tech begins to request changes for the person to make to correct the problem.
If you need my CBS.log, etc...I can supply it...as well as registry branches and whatever is needed to solve the component store corruption. My restore dates have been tried and I am unable to go back farther. Recovery doesn't do squat since the tools are minimal with the recovery disk. So, I am at the end of my knowledge and hope to get help to cure this.
I also have another working system next to me that is uneffected with this problem and it is networked with this erroring system. Both have the same OP systems and updates, etc. If files are needed to be exchanged between the two, this is possible.

Thanks,

Thank You, file attached.
I have also included an Windows update log that I located on system. This is right around the date things went wrong on system. It seems the problems started when I did a Windows update on a few downloaded Windows Security Updates. The updates installed and requested a reboot. After rebooting the same updates requested to install again. They continue to request to be installed, so I turned install updates off because updates were not able to download after these prior updates requested to be installed again, repeatidly.

Update: I did a Automatic Updates troubleshooting report at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=231149
and uploaded the latest log it has given.
This troubleshooter was automatic and ran windowsupdate.diagcab
file to create the log.

Can you please click on the Start Orb > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Turn Windows Features on or off, and just leave that box on screen. No need to modify anything, just leave it on screen.

The reason is that Windows does not actually generate certain volatile parts of the registry until they are needed, and this is a good way to force the creation of the Components hive in Windows 7 (it was so much easier in Vista! The Components hive existed all the time, and the Winners key was not thrown into some far flung corner of the registry! Sigh!)

Can you now please open up regedit again, and export HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS\ServicingStackVersions

Once you have exported this key, you may close the "Turn Windows Features On and Off" dialogue.

please attach the export to your reply. (Note - I'm groping in the dark here, as this is not an error I have ever seen, let alone dealt with!)

Hello Noel,

I did exactly what you asked and to access the components folder in reg I had to add permissions for myself to open the folder. Strangely the folder did not open to view contents, so I figure it was just empty. I included a zip file with the reg branch and a gif file to view the directory visual.

Take your time Noel, I am very patient and will work with you on this. Strange that the system runs so good though with these errors it has. I have been researching like crazy online to find a fix, but so far nothing I have tried has corrected it. I was going to start copying some manifest over from my #2 computer networked with this one, but I will hold until further notice.
It started on around 9/28/2012 after trying to update a few Windows Updates that reported to me to install.
When I try to update, It errors of course with a Code 80073712 and I have exhausted the fixes this code gives for help. None of my Windows updates will show in the update history or installed updates indexed windows as well.
I have updated the Windows Updates to Download them and let me install them, but I have not received any alerts from this yet. I have notice many of these types of problems in online tech forums that I am having here with this issue. Right now it mostly feels like I possibly got an update and it did not complete the install somehow. I get this idea because after installing the few updates around 28-29 sept keep asking to be installed, after they been installed.

Wow, I just took a look at the Component branch on my Computer system #2 next to me and it is far from empty. Sheesh!! How in the heck is my system even running without all this information in the registry. I am surprised I am not getting BSOD by the buckets.
I got an idea I am going to try with this system , but will do a major backup first. I'll let you know what happens.
I included in this post a snap of my Update History for the past couple days. I usually get a small list like this after an update that I have installed. As you can see in this image...Updates keep reinstalling after they posted that they have already installed.
I'll post my outcome on this test idea I want to try.

Well, I think I have found good news with my test that I have performed. After completeing the test, I was able to do a SFC /Scannow. It reported erros of course, but managed to fix some of them.
Next I went into Windows Update and it scanned for updates, it found updates this time without the error.
14 important updates
38 optional updates - most of these were language updates I did not install.

I am sort of paranoid about the system though. If I shut down my system to reboot, what will happen?!?!
After exporting the COMPONENTS branch of my #2 system registry & network transferred it to #1 system registry,
I just have no idea how my system will react with after a surgical replacement like this. I am not taking any chances, so I am going to run my updates, and some registry checkers and the SFC scan again. I will not reboot untill I feel I have completed as much as possible to the system. I hope it does not fail and my thoughts are it will do fine. It was running good without any COMPONENTS listing in Registry, now it has something to grip teeth into for support.
I will update my post after reboot sometime tonight. :geek:

It isn't possible to hot swap a COMPONENTS hive from another computer, you'll make Windows Update so confused as it will say that updates have been installed when they haven't, and vice versa. It's enough of a problem with standard updates, cumulative security updates take this to a whole new level.

My suggestion would be to backup everything, then reinstall Windows. I don't know how your COMPONENTS hive has got into this state, but it isn't a good sign at all!

Tom

Just a followup for the thread. The registry portion inserted into my registry allowed the SFC/ Windows Updates/ & Installed updates to work enough to do an upgrade. Before inserting this branch into registry, my system backed out of Upgrades every time I tried. Presently re-installing Windows updates and having positive results. :D

Everything worked perfectly. All updates installed perfect and system is rock hard once again. Thanks you NoelDP and Tom982 for the advise. I decided to chance an unsafe route to get system workable and I got lucky. I hope maybe it can help someone with this same senario, though I would not suggest doing surgery on your registry as I did. :geek:

I removed my posted .zip system logs from thread for security reasons only in my prior post.

Hello Bradmph
I know this thread is very old !!
I am hoping that you may get a notification and read it !!

I have exactly the same problem as you did, exactly !! I, like you, have researched absolutely everywhere and I cannot find a complete resolution to this. It has been going on for a long long time now and I am about to give up

I have read through your thread but I dont understand the fix you eventually did. I am not a computer savvy person. Could you please if you have time write back and let me know what to do ? I am at my wits end with this and you are the only person I have found who had the same problems.

I look forward to a reply

Thanks
sjhonan

Hello sjhonan, welcome to the forums!

You really don't want to perform that fix, it's not good at all and was very much a last resort. The COMPONENTS is a registry hive containing all the information Windows Update requires to determine whether a component needs updating or not. It is also incredibly cross linked with the files on your computer, in one of the subkeys, each registry key is the name of a manifest file on your computer so if you use another COMPONENTS hive in place of your corrupt one, they will almost certainly not line up and Windows Update will get very, very confused and will almost certainly fail with a lot more errors than you have at the moment!

If you could post your CheckSUR log and CBS log, we will be able to establish whether it's possible to fix this :)

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log (if you get an access denied error, copy it to your Desktop first)

Zip them up and attach them to your next post please.

Tom

Hello Tom
I just want to say thanks very much for replying to me, and quickly !!

This is the first thread I have ever seen that is the same as the problems I have. It is my husbands laptop and the children use it too, I am not sure how I even got these problems. All I know is that is has taken a long time to investigate, and as I said I am not pc savvy. I am so glad that someone is finally helping, I am tired looking.

I have tried to do what you asked and hope its ok.

Thanks so much
Sheena

Us being in the same time zone really helps speed things up because whenever I help someone from the states, or anywhere else with a fair time zone difference, there really isn't that much time when both of us are online and it tends to go into a loop of one of two posts a day, then the really bad threads stretch over several weeks!

Windows Update isn't very well documented at all so it's a good job you found us! There aren't many of us who deal almost exclusively with it, I guess it's a bit of an acquired taste, or maybe no one else is mad enough to go near these thousand line logs!

Thanks for the logs! You did it all perfectly. All in all, the logs aren't pointing to any particular culprits and both have very generic errors in them. Your CBS log is full of ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT errors:

I would like you to upload your COMPONENTS hive for me please, this is where the corruption lies and I'll be able to assess the extent of the problem.

Upload a file to Dropbox

Note: If you prefer, the same techniques can be applied to your Skydrive however these instructions may not necessarily work for Skydrive.

  1. If you haven't already created a Dropbox account, please do so Here
  2. Although this procedure can be done directly through the website, it is much easier to do so via the Windows client which can be downloaded from the Dropbox website:

    https://www.dropbox.com/install

  3. After you have downloaded and installed that, you should now see Dropbox in your Favourites box in Windows Explorer. This is the folder that will be synchronised with the Dropbox servers, anything that you wish to back up online can be put in here, but today we will be using it to transfer files.

    Favourites%20list.PNG

  4. To access your Dropbox folder, just click on the link in the top left hand corner of Windows Explorer (accessible from any location - Documents etc.). Alternatively, you can double click on the icon
    icon.jpg
found in your system tray (next to the time). If you are still having issues locating this folder, unless otherwise specified, it can be found under this location: C:\Users\{Your username}\Dropbox
  5. Copy all of the following files to the Public folder in your Dropbox:

    • C:\Windows\system32\config\components (it has no file extension)

  6. Select all files by pressing Ctrl+A then right-click and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder
  7. This will create a .zip
    zip_icon.png
    file in your Public folder.
  8. Right-click on this file and select Dropbox > Copy Public Link then Paste (Ctrl + V) this link into your next post for me please

Replies concerning the fix to this issue are as follows.
I have found no fix and I have searched exhaustedly. Apparently it is one of those event errors that is not a big deal, though it machine guns the heck out of the event logs and takes up system time and memory. I have contacted tech support and checked other forums with no fix yet. As common as this nuisance is, you would think it gets more attention and be fixed. I know ATI, aka AMD has explained it is a Windows error. I can bet calling Microsoft would give you the same answer but visa versa towards AMD as the reason. I have lived with it through 3 different cards now and it just keeps logging along. If you don't want the logs to happen with this error, shut them off in the event options log reporting. Unseen, unheard. :.)

Hi Sheena,

Fortunately that won't be the problem, it will just be hidden or something because if you were missing your system32 folder, Windows wouldn't start at all!

Command Prompt

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    attrib -s -h C:\Windows\system32

Now see if the folder is there :)
