Hi I have a laptop and desktop PCs running windows 7 pro I am running out of storage on both and going to get a NAS storage d link system because I would like to be able to view files on one on the other. But I didn't know is you had to go on the internet website every time you needed something or if it was like a server location that showed up when you go to my computer. Or if it is easier just use external hdd. Any ideas are apprecited. Thanks

To answer the first question, when you hook a NAS to the network, it will appear on you PC as a Drive and to get to it you map it,
ie
\\NASDRIVE\
Requires a little knowledge on the network side but if you have various PCs then all will have access

To answer 2nd Q, it all depends on how fast you want the data back and for and it also depends on your budget
External HDD: hassle free, Fast, Cheap, Mobile
NAS: Configurations..., Expensive, SLOW(unless you buy a Gigabit NAS$$$), network discoverable friendly

cheers!

NAS megabit: watching a film no skips is ok, but if you skip and play like that then it will stall
NAS gigabit : it's ok no matter what

100 Mbps (Fast Ethernet) = 12 MB/s (slow if you ask me for a LAN)
1.0 Gbps (Gigabit Ethernet) = 120 MB/s (somewhat faster than a regular HDD)
