Default File Type Associations - Restore

Restore Default Windows 7 File Extension Type Associations

   Information
The downloads below will allow you to restore the Windows 7 default registry entries and program associations of the selected file extension type.
   Note
This can be helpful for example when a file extension type opens with the wrong program by default, has the wrong icon, or is missing or corrupted in the registry. Downloading the .reg file for the selected file extension in the tutorial below, will restore that file extension back to default for all of these items above.

Since there are so many default file extension types in Windows 7, it may take a bit to have a complete list of them below. If the file extension type you need to restore is not listed below yet, then please post a request for it. I'll be happy to add it to the list. :)
   Warning

Default program associations for file extensions are a per user setting by default, so you will need to be logged on to the effected user account to be able to restore the default associations of the file extension for that specific user account.

If you are logged in as a standard user and this still does not help, then have the administrator also merge the needed .reg for the file extension below while logged into their administrator account.

These default file extensions should only be used in Windows 7.

:note: For Windows 10, please see here - Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Customization Tutorials

Here's How:
1. Click on a listed file extension below the blue NOTE box that you would like to restore the default associations of. This will be for the downloadable .reg file for the listed file extension.

2. Save the .reg file to your desktop.

3. Right click on the downloaded .reg file, and click on Merge.
NOTE: If you wish to see what changes will be made by the REG file, then you can right click on the extracted REG file and click on Edit to see the default registry entries that will be added. REG files are just text files. The "Edit" function just opens them in Notepad.
   Tip
If you do not see a Merge option when you right click on the REG file, then you will need to check in Default Programs to set the reg file extension to have it's Current Default program set as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Afterwards, try merging the REG file again.

4. If prompted, click on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK.
NOTE: If you are logged in a standard user account, then you will get a Cannot import type error. Just click on OK for it. This is normal since what cannot be imported can only be done so by an administrator account instead. It will still restore the default association of the file extension though.

5. When finished, you can delete the downloaded .zip or .reg files on the desktop if you like.

6. Log off and log on, or restart the computer to apply.

Default Windows 7 File Extension Types:
   Note
To download all available file extension fixes below in one ZIP folder, click on the Download button below and save the ZIP file to your desktop. Open the ZIP file, and extract (drag and drop) the REG file for the file extension you want to restore to your desktop. Now you could just pick up at step 3 above.

It would obviously be preferable if Windows itself provided a mechanism to do this task but then "pigs might fly". In the end it comes down to a matter of trust. In this matter Brink has a considerable reputation here and we trust his skill and integrity.

I think that the note is a good idea but when I tried it I couldn’t view the contents, “edit” wasn’t on the menu, I could only run it. Probably my ineptitude but “There's really not a way to fix the user” :D. How about including a “read me” text file in the zip with the .reg file?

Of course being a typical European I am naturally cynical and I did have a look at the registry using regedit so I could see the changes made and now appreciate what you say – but – this was inevitably after the event. I think that it’s the leap of faith that troubles people in the position I was in. Having been badly savaged by the dammend machine we are very cautious.

kado897, said that it is a matter of trust and I quite agree, I now do and also acknowledge that the reputation is entirely deserved. However at the time I had to take the decision to trust I didn't have much to go on (apart from 22 pages of thanks!)

Whilst I appreciate that there will be a proportion of people who mistakenly cause the problem by messing with the configuration I don’t remember so many suffering from extension association problems with previous releases of windows. A search on “.lnk association” leads me to suspect that there is more to it. Certainly in my case I didn’t do it knowingly, I have an idea that the association change took place as a symptom of using the “open with” choice after a right click on a programme I wanted to examine the contents of before running it. But I might be wrong…

Certainly your fix is infinitely preferable to using system restore especially when a machine is just being loaded; so much is changed in such a short time. It’s not just that it works but also that has elegance and it doesn’t involve downloading many Megs of dubious data from nanny at Redmond. Once again, many thanks for a great service!

Arnot

Reg files are just text files. The edit function just opens them in Notepad so if this is missing from your right-click menu use notepad to view them.

Ha ha!

There is another question however, your missing right-click "Edit" entry. This is a Windows default. You may need to run the reg entry from this tutorial to get it back.

Having had a bit of a play,it appears that the options presented on a right clik are context sensitive and the edit option is avaialable for files where there is an associated editor.

So, jpegs etc have the edit option but exe's and suchlike don't. This all seems logical and doesn't present any problems at the moment. Most files don't have the "open with" option (but some do) so if I want to peek at the content I have to use wordpad by opening it first and then opening the relevant file.

So.... I don't thnk there is a problem there but I will have a look at the possibilities.

Ta!

Arnont,

If you still have "Edit" missing from the context menu of a REG file, the download and merge the REG option in the tutorial to see if that may be able to restore it for you afterwards.

Hi Guys,
Restoring the file default type .exe by merging the .reg file worked brilliantly for me. I am delighted if i hadnt found this post i would have been lost.
All i had to do was click on the .exe in the post download the file to my desktop, then right click and click merge. After that everything was back to normal.

The problem i had was by accident i had changed my .exe files to run on an ealier versions of windows and mine being windows 7 most of my programs would not work. Not even system restore and im not great with very technical aspects of programming so i thought i had made a big mistake and was trying for ages to fix it.
I might try and restore it now to an earlier time so it might be back as if i never did it at all. Really greatful.
Thanks Guys.

Restore default associations for .hta files would be a big help (seeing many Win-7 folks who open .hta files in Notepad for some reason.)

Thanks,

Gordo

You might see if rebuilding the icon cache may be able to help. :)
