Default File Type Associations - Restore

Restore Default Windows 7 File Extension Type Associations

   Information
The downloads below will allow you to restore the Windows 7 default registry entries and program associations of the selected file extension type.
   Note
This can be helpful for example when a file extension type opens with the wrong program by default, has the wrong icon, or is missing or corrupted in the registry. Downloading the .reg file for the selected file extension in the tutorial below, will restore that file extension back to default for all of these items above.

Since there are so many default file extension types in Windows 7, it may take a bit to have a complete list of them below. If the file extension type you need to restore is not listed below yet, then please post a request for it. I'll be happy to add it to the list. :)
   Warning

Default program associations for file extensions are a per user setting by default, so you will need to be logged on to the effected user account to be able to restore the default associations of the file extension for that specific user account.

If you are logged in as a standard user and this still does not help, then have the administrator also merge the needed .reg for the file extension below while logged into their administrator account.

These default file extensions should only be used in Windows 7.

:note: For Windows 10, please see here - Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Customization Tutorials

Here's How:
1. Click on a listed file extension below the blue NOTE box that you would like to restore the default associations of. This will be for the downloadable .reg file for the listed file extension.

2. Save the .reg file to your desktop.

3. Right click on the downloaded .reg file, and click on Merge.
NOTE: If you wish to see what changes will be made by the REG file, then you can right click on the extracted REG file and click on Edit to see the default registry entries that will be added. REG files are just text files. The "Edit" function just opens them in Notepad.
   Tip
If you do not see a Merge option when you right click on the REG file, then you will need to check in Default Programs to set the reg file extension to have it's Current Default program set as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Afterwards, try merging the REG file again.

4. If prompted, click on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK.
NOTE: If you are logged in a standard user account, then you will get a Cannot import type error. Just click on OK for it. This is normal since what cannot be imported can only be done so by an administrator account instead. It will still restore the default association of the file extension though.

5. When finished, you can delete the downloaded .zip or .reg files on the desktop if you like.

6. Log off and log on, or restart the computer to apply.

Default Windows 7 File Extension Types:
   Note
To download all available file extension fixes below in one ZIP folder, click on the Download button below and save the ZIP file to your desktop. Open the ZIP file, and extract (drag and drop) the REG file for the file extension you want to restore to your desktop. Now you could just pick up at step 3 above.

The .m4a and .aac file extensions are not associated with a program by default in Windows 7.

What were you wanting to use with them?

Hello Weiming, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You should be able to right click on the file, to use Open with like in the tutorial below to either select the program or browse to and select the program's .exe file to have it open with the program by default afterwards.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/12196-open-change-default-program.html

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Hi,
thank you very much for the quick reply, I tried that, but the problem is my windows can not recognize that type of file, and I also checked online what is the reason i cannot open the .file file, suggested reason is some registry problem, I used the software "RegCure" to fix my system, but still I cannot open it right. I tried using Notepad to open it, it was opened, but the problem is my other software which will try to open that file can not open it anymore, so i want to change it back to .file format, but seems I can never changed it back, because when I use "open with", I checked apply to all type of file. even i downloaded the new file, the default open method is Notepad now, which my other software cannot recognize....

Please don't use registry cleaning programs. They often do more damage. :(

What program is this for?

You should also be able to do a system restore using a restore point dated before your changed the association to have it go back to using what it was using on the date of the restore point.

No worries. A system restore is not so bad since it's not a complete factory restore.

Sir Brinks where are you?

i'm just wondering if you can come up with a "one download" that will have all these files listed here so one can use it as a sort of maintenance tool....if it's not too much to ask.

and yes, if i can throw this in as well. anytime i do an sfc/scannow i always end up with this "iassdo.dll.mui" problem and i'm wondering why the hell that is. now mind you, the system is functioning perfectly, no noticeable problems.

but this is what i always get in the log file:

CSI 000002cc [SR] Could not reproject corrupted file [ml:60{30},l:58{29}]"\??\C:\Windows\SysWOW64\en-US"\[l:28{14}]"iassdo.dll.mui"; source file in store is also corrupted

and then somewhere down the line i see this:

CSI 00000314 [SR] Verify complete
CSI 00000315 [SR] Repairing 1 components
CSI 00000317 Hashes for file member \SystemRoot\WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-n..ce_iassdo.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_en-us_e86c80b89a3f77b7\iassdo.dll.mui do not match actual file [l:28{14}]"iassdo.dll.mui" :
CSI 00000325 [SR] Verify and Repair Transaction completed. All files and registry keys listed in this transaction have been successfully repaired

question is, does it really get repaired? if so why does it always show up like this?

Hello Sandpd,

If you like, there's already a ZIP download in the blue note box available that contains all the .reg files for each file extension. :)

The other issue would be better to post in a new thread though since it's off topic of this tutorial.
