Default Gateway Not Available - Intermittent Internet

I am running Windows 7 64-bit. My Internet connection keeps getting dropped, and when I run the troubleshooter, I can get two different messages: "Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding" or "The default gateway is not available." When I get the former, I might as well give up getting on the Internet. When I get the latter, the problem can be fixed. Any amount of time later, my connection is dropped again. It can be a day or just a couple of minutes.

I used to have a router, but when this problem happened, I wired it straight from the satellite to the modem, from the modem to the computer.

I contacted my ISP, and we ran through several steps all for nothing. I connected my old laptop, and it works just fine.

Great! When you've run for a long enough period of time to confirm it's all good then you can mark the thread as "solved" when you pass by here again!

Similar issue

I am having a similar issue. I have internet, but after a bit my browser, nor anything else, will connect to internet, even though it shows an active connection. If i restart my pc, it fixes the issue till next time. I did run it in safe mode all day today, and had no problems at all. I tried running the program from above and it gives me an error saying machine mismatch...i used ia64 for my windows 7 64. And help would be great!

I'm sorry to say my problem returned. It worked all day yesterday, but when I got up this morning, I had to restart the computer and then reset the local area connection before I could get on the Internet. Can I delete all the tunnel adapters?

Also, when I use the 6to4 remover, it says that the image file ..... (a file in Temp folder) is valid, but is for a machine type other than the current machine. And then the messages appearing in the program window says about this same file, "This version of devcon.exe is not compatible with the version of Windows you are running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need a x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher." I chose the 64-bit when I opened the program, which is the version of 7 I have.

Yes, use that same file to do it. But now we've got to figure out why they're being created in the first place. Are the drivers for all your network adapters up to date?

All drivers are up to date. I went to RealTek's web site and downloaded the current driver for it. That didn't do anything, but at least they are updated.

In your case you will want to disable and uninstall both of the Msoft virtual wifi mini port adaptors which tend to cause problems with wireless connections. I'm not too sure why you have two of them but even one can cause connection problems.

As for the tunnel adaptor problem, save the file below, unzip and run the file to remove the tunnel adaptors. This is my original file. After that run the second file below the same way, this one will fix any problems associated with the network stack or winsock.

I ran both of your files, and the problem still persists. Below is what is happening when I run the first program. I still have as many tunnel adapters as I originally did.

Also, when I use the 6to4 remover, it says that the image file ..... (a file in Temp folder) is valid, but is for a machine type other than the current machine. And then the messages appearing in the program window says about this same file, "This version of devcon.exe is not compatible with the version of Windows you are running. I chose the 64-bit when I opened the program, which is the version of 7 I have.

To remove the 6 to 4 tunnel adaptors manually you just need to go into Device Manager then to Network Adaptors, at the top of the page choose "View" then "show hidden devices" at that point you should be able to see all the tunnel adaptors, at which point you should be able to uninstall all of the tunnel adaptors you see on the list.

I also have attached the automatic batch file for the 6 to4 tunnel adaptor remover that is made to work with Windows 7, I believe the last one was outdated. After unzipping or extracting the file you will want to right click the file and "Run as Administrator". There is a 32 and 64 bit version.

While you have Device Manger open,..you should also disable both of those Microsoft virtual wifi mini port adaptors which are only used for sharing a wireless connection but can also cause connection problems.

You should be able to use your router again after that. Test it out to see if the connection is back up and that it stays connected this time. :)

After deleting all the tunnel adapters, it quit going off on its own (at least for now). But when I turn my computer on, I still have to reset the local connection to get to the Internet. Ideas?

Did you enter DNS server addresses into your IPv6 properties for some reason, the bold ones at the bottom? I'm just asking because it's not normal to see DNS entries for IPv6. If you did then please remove those DNS entries from there.

In fact you should remove the DNS entries from the IPv4 properties and use the router's DNS settings instead. If you are using DHCP you don't need to type anything into the IPv4 properties.

As for the reset problem, please post your ipconfig/all after removing the DNS entries from IPv4 properties if you put them there. Just make sure you have the DNS servers typed into the routers settings for now.

Do you have AVG or iTunes installed on this system?

Hello,

I didn't enter any server addresses and decided not to use the router (never used it, won't miss it). Please forgive me but networking is not my forte. Do I still need to remove these in IPv4 and 6? If not, below are the ipconfig /all results. I do have iTunes and AVG. Also, it did go back off. I have to restart the computer and then run the troubleshooter on the network adapters. It still says the default gateway is not available, but it fixes it and lets me on the Internet. If it goes off again, I have to restart again to get back on.

The reason I asked about both iTunes and AVG is that they are both capable of causing connection problems on Windows systems. I'm not too surprised that you have both of them.

iTunes installs a service called Bonjour, you will want to disable this Bonjour service in Windows services. You can find Windows services at services.msc .

You would be far better served using a router if you have one because it adds a layer of protection because of the built in gateway or firewall.

AVG has something called a wireless connection filter somewhere in it's settings, if you can find that setting disable it or uninstall AVG.

After that reboot your machine and see if it connects automatically like's it's supposed too.

You might find that filter listed in the network adapter properties window (easy to spot if it's there). Uncheck it, OK out of the window, reboot.

Same problem...

I am having the same problem, I downloaded the suggested file and unzipped it. The first file ran but said nothing was removed. the second said it was not made for my machine. I am tired of my connection constantly dropping....anyone have suggestions? Or do you understand what this means? I get constant DNS errors and default gateway errors...THANKS

Alyse, I don't see any problems at all with the ipconfig. You may have better lucking using a different DNS server like Google at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 , try removing the DNS entries from the IPv4 properties and instead type the DNS servers into your routers settings. McAfee is also famous for causing DNS problems, if you have McAfee it will need to be removed.
