I have an old 64 bit, W7 Ultimate Samsung laptop that I use for experiments.

It's kinda slow, with an i3-2350M CPU and 4G ram but it works well enough.

Just now, I deleted 2 of its 4 partitions and added the resulting free space to the remaining 2.

The main partition that I use most, now has 349G with 193 free.

I thought I'd tidy up this partition by defragging it, but I've tried several different apps and none of them work; they just stall.

Even O&O 2.2, which works fine on my other computers, tells me that the defrag is gonna take 6 days.

Anyone know if a command line defrag in DOS would work? Like, booting with a repair disk and running a command from there?

Or, maybe I could pull the laptop drive and slave it via USB into a desktop pc.

Suggestions welcomed :-)

Hi teckneeculler,
Greets,
Sir,

''booting with a repair disk and running a command from there?''

1. Do you know what it means if it solves the problem this way ? It means problem with the original installation!

2. Try to use Defraggler before recovery disk.

(a) You may choose Installer or Portable : Defraggler - Builds

(b) launch the app, choose the Partition & click Analyze

(c) Now click File list tab & Mark all the files. Then go back to the previous Drive tab & click Defrag. It will make the Defrag very fast.

3. You may use Sir SIW2's recovery iso. That has multiple in-built disk management programs. So, you don't have to run any DOS commands.

a) Download ( Approx. 390 MB ) : https://1drv.ms/u/s!AkcyDjKJJ6KwiAf4qa7-wSbD6vWm

b) Check sum : SHA-1 : ac70d205d4929db87fee9a9c89067cc6602818d7

c) You may use HashMyFiles to calculate & compare the SHA-1 check sum : 10 Tools to Verify File Integrity Using MD5 and SHA1 Hashes • Raymond.CC

d) You may use Usb7ice to burn ISO to a USB Pen drive : View attachment Usb7ice.zip

( Extract Usb7ice.zip & run Usb7ice.exe. Select the pen drive, browse to the 17514x64-v10.iso & click Copy ISO to USB drive. Need not change anything else.
It will work for both UEFI & Legacy Bios as said by sir SIW 2 )

Thanks & Regards. ...

If you deleted partitions then gigs of data may have to be moved closer to the front of the drive so it can take a long time

Hi,
@ teckneculler : Sir,
1. Glad to know that your problem is resolved. Very well pointed out by sir samuria! The First defrag may considerably take long time due to the fact.
2. Whatever be the situation, The particular steps to use defraggler, will make the defrag much faster.

@ samuria : Thanks for the fact. I did not think it in that depth!

Thanks & Regards. ...

If you are using O&O 22, did you try the Stealth mode?

It might have been quicker to make an image, then restore it.

SIW2: No, I didn't try STEALTH mode.
TBH, I've never checked to see what that option is.
Always figured that SPACE was the way to go...
