Defragging

My System Mechanic says my 3 hard drives need to be defragged. One is my main hard drive, and the other 2 are storage. Can the ones that I use for storage be defragged? I do not want to risk losing anything.

I wouldn't let some 3rd party program mess with my disks like that.
Windows 7 is not XP it handles such tasks best on its own.

Just go to Start and type Disk Defragmenter in the search dialogue start that program and you see this


Either set a scheduled defrag or just pick a drive, click Analyze and when you feel like it, click Defrag

they are safe to defrag with no loss of data, so long as you dont lose power. dont defrag during severe weather. (sounds silly, doesnt it?)

defragging your drives regularly is safe and advisable, even when it's raining.

it rearranges the files on the drives so they can 'load faster'.

If you have a 1TB HDD 60% full of .mkv file's don't defrag as it isn't necessary. Otherwise I'd use My Defrag which also comes in a x64 version.

Same here. Win 7 defrags to 0%. So you get -5% defrag by third party! :shock:

And as for any application like System Mechanic, I wouldn't let them touch any of my systems.

Some 3rd party defraggers use different methods, and/or offer to optimize file placement on the physical disc for quicker access. Notice a difference, seat of the pants? Probably not. But boot defrag, and optimize amongst other features, are things 3rd party apps offer. A Guy

I don't know if there's a difference between 7's defrag utility, and 3rd party defraggers, but what you don't want to do is to use both interchangeably.

That is true,,, because the fact is,, you have to turn off Windows Defrag,,, by using a 3rd party defrag, that might defrag differently than 7's internal defrag, you more than likely are double working your drive and wasting effort trying to use a 3rd party Defragger.

7 will just come in behind it and correct whatever the 3rd party defrag did

Not saying that it will,, just that it could.

Hello and welcome to SF, moomak (as a general rule you should have posted that problem in a new thread
What is your Defragger set for? (by default it sets itself up to defrag at some time in the early morning once a week)
Did you by any chance change that setting? Or was the computer possibly shut down at that time?
Just put Disk Defragmenter in the search bar and see what it says. (run it as administrator)
What happens if you start it manually ? Does it still refuse to start?

Like most others, I am skeptical of the need for a third party tool and have never seen any documentation that one is needed.

Windows 7 defragger ignores fragments larger than 64 MB, which is a change from earlier versions.

Ten years ago, I defragmented frequently but eventually realized it was out of obsessiveness rather than any practical advantage.

I installed Windows 7 over a year ago and have NEVER manually defragged. I have defrag set to work once a week.

Right now:

My C drive is 3 % fragmented

My D drive is 1% fragmented

My E drive is 0% fragmented.

I check the defrag levels from time to time and have never seen any drive fragmented more than 5%.
