Solved Deleted something

Hello,

I've been very stupid, And accidentally deleted my Command Prompt (CMD). I was wondering how do I possibly get It back?

Type CMD in the start button search box.

do you mean the shortcut for it in your start-menu?

have you looked in your recycle bin?

alternatively, just type cmd into your start-menu searchbox

it's easy to make yourself a new shortcut too - ask for help if you need it

In addition, if it was a shortcut in the Start Menu, you could also use the tutorial below to restore the Command Prompt shortcut if you didn't want to manually create a new one.

It wasn't a shortcut.

If the excellent suggestions above don't work, you can do a System Restore. That should restore your Command Prompt.

how did you delete it?

what exactly did you delete? cmd.exe?

Right, So I putted the cmd.exe in my desktop. I was going to delete this file, I didin't want but accidentally selected the CMD as well. Then I putted It in the " Bin ". And deleted everything In the bin, But then I suddenly realised that the cmd was In the bin as well.

here's a copy of a cmd.exe from a 32bit system.

put it in windows/system32

Try a system restore as stated above to a time before you did this, or you can extract the cmd.exe from the windows installation cd and copy it back to your system directory.

Could you possibly give me the full address, because I can't find It.

If you have deleted the cmd.exe file from c:\windows\system32 folder, you could find a copy of CMD.exe in the c:\windows\winsxs\ folder.

My 64 bit windows 7 has two sets of CMD.exe as shown in the image. You could search for it in the windows\winsxs folder and copy back.

you may have your system files hidden.

in windows explorer, hit the 'alt' key to bring up a menu bar >> tools >> folder options >> view >> show hidden files, folders or drives.

c:\windows\system32 is where it should live.

remember to hide your files again afterwards.

Right so I've added, It to my System32. Thing's such as, Bat files. Will they work now? Also, Command Prompt? In the accessories folder?

As long as the cmd.exe file is in c:\windows\system32 folder, it should work fine.

You can also try to access it by pressing shift key while right clicking on a folder and selecting "Open Command Window here".

how to find cmd.exe

Just click on my computer, at the right top of your screen type in winsxs, click on the winsxs folder. then at the top of the screen type in cmd, scroll down and find (cmd.exe 295 kb for 32 bit win) or (cmd.exe 337 kb for 64 bit win) copy that application to C:windows/system32. you don't have to re-install windows and go through all of that trouble.
