Solved deleted Vista files in Windows 7

If you do buy a Windows 7 DVD, get the OEM version, you'll save yourself some money and if you use E-Bay or Amazon - tread carefully or you'll get ripped off.

Yes run the SFC /scannow, it will attempt to fix those files. Try starting the Dell reoveryto see if it has a repair option that will keep your files and settings. You may have to reinstall programs regardless.

I once ran a duplicate file remover, it resulted in a complete fresh install. Those programs are blind to what the file is, it only looks for duplicate names and file size, be it a MP3 or a system .bat file.

I would recommend saving your files on the external device and doing a fresh install. Dell may be convinced to send you a free Win7 DVD. They did for me on my WinXP laptop.

Be advised Microsoft does not support OEM installs, but the OEM DVD is about $100 cheaper than the full version.

If you do experience problems with activating and validating an OEM version, just tell Microsoft you've built your own computer as that effectively makes you a system builder, but I don't think it would come to that as the boys and girls in Redmond, CA will be happy you're not using counterfeit software.

You could always tell Dell that the recovery disks you burned are faulty and chances are they'll send you a Windows 7 DVD - it's certainly worth a try.

To be fair to Microsoft, if they started giving out OS discs to anyone who asked, they'd soon be out of business.

I'm sure theog is probably right, your best option lies with Dell.

Don't give up on Dell, they sent me their OEM OS, Drivers, and bloatware disks for a 5 year old laptop. May be another story for Win7 though.
