Probably, but with a 30Gb HDD, you would only get around 5Gbs of storage anyways.

Would not be worth it, but yes it would work.

RAM is way too little. You need at least 2 gb for win7 to run smoothly. If you can upgrade to 2 gb, then hooking up an external drive will solve your storage problem.

Dell DOES NOT support Vista or Win 7 on this older model. DOS and XP is all that is supported for drivers. You may have a hard time finding all the hardware drivers for Win 7 (it needs Vista drivers at a minimum).

And as noted, memory is one issue as the maximum memory is 512KB and that is insufficient for either Vista or Win 7. Most of this model has an old Pentium III CPU and that is another issue. Have you run the Microsoft Windows 7 compatibility test? I doubt that it will meet minimum requirements.

Save your $$ for a new, modern technology. PC.

Best to run the Win7 upgrade advisor. It'll tell you exactly how well equipped your system is to handle win7.

But I would certainly give it a shot. Win7 has been known to work on dinosaur machines. As for drivers, even old XP ones work in many cases.

I've been running Windows 8 Consumer Preview Edition (32 bit, of course) on this ancient laptop. I have the maximum 512 MB of RAM and an upgraded 80 GB HDD (partitioned in halves to host XP, as well).

Windows Experience Index: 2 (yes, I have my doubts, too :)

So...I have no reason to think Windows 7 would NOT run on this dinosaur :)

And since evidence suggests Windows 8 is faster than 7, which in turn is faster than XP, I'd urge to upgrade if possible (i.e. no software dependent on XP).

The only drawbacks: I haven't gotten the Netgear PCMIA Wifi card to work, yet. And I haven't found driver for the PCI Modem (but who uses that anyway?). And it has frozen a couple of times.

Will it run? Absolutely. Will it be fast, responsive, and smooth? Nope, not until you bump the memory up. A typical base install of a lower version of Windows 7 would take 12-15 GB of space, but by the time you'd be adding applications, and your pagefile's usage...you'd be out of space pretty quickly.

You could spend $150 on a new drive and memory, or you could save up and spend $450 on a brand new laptop that will get you several years of usage.
