Dell OptiPlex GX620 Error

I just want to ask you guys this here

I'm getting 1 & 3 plus 4 beeps

I have 1GB Sticks in all 4 slots

I know 1 of them is probably bad

According to the Dell documentation 1-3-1 through 2-4-4 is memory problem. The documentation does not go into further detail.

If this is occurring during bootup and prior to Windows loading, it's likely a memory problem since that's when memory is checked.

Make sure that, prior to remove or insert memory sticks, you unplug the cable from the Power supply and wait 1/2 a minute.

Sometimes is only a bad contact on the slot.
- detach the power cable from the HDD to make sure it won't boot
- Remove all memory sticks and spray a contact cleaner on the memory contacts and on the slot
- insert one memory stick and start the computer. If it POST normally (no beeps), power off, unplug the cable from the PS and insert another memory stick and start the computer.
- insert one by one memory stick till you find the bad one.

So it might be just dirty in the slots

I tried all 6 RAM Sticks I have, Same thing 3 & 4,

I will try putting 1 stick in a different stot

Don't mix memory types and speeds. The 4 sticks should be same brand and speed.

Dell's have a history of compatibility with non-Dell memory. I work the Dell forums and this has been an issue for years. Even some of the newer models can have issues. Crucial is one brand that is guaranteed to work in a Dell and what we usually recommend on the Dell forum for non-Dell branded memory.

As Megahertz notes, do not mix memory as this can also be an issue.

FWIW, Windows XP is the newest OS officially supported (drivers) by Dell.
I checked the Crucial Memory and they apparently do not offer memory for the GX620 as that model is not found.

If it is a memory slot or slots I would not consider repairing it (replacing the motherboard), considering the PC's age.

You said you have 4- 1 GB sticks installed but you list only 3 in your last post.

Also, given the age of your system, they should be DDR 2, not DDR 3. I don't have time to check the specs for all the sticks that you have.

As a suggestion, you might try two 512 sticks or two 1 GB sticks. I'm not sure which slots you need to use when you only have two sticks.

When you get your system to boot, run a scan from Crucial, it will tell you the specifics of the ram for your system.
